***Steven Patrick Morrissey***, known by his surname, is an English singer, songwriter, and author. He came to prominence as the frontman of rock band the ***"[Smiths](https://cutt.ly/vvmCtDB)"** who were active from 1982 to 1987. Since then, he has pursued a successful solo career.
Morrissey's music is characterised by his baritone voice and distinctive lyrics with recurring themes of emotional isolation, sexual longing, self-deprecating and dark humour, and anti-establishment stances.
***"Maladjusted"*** is Morrissey's sixth studio album, attempt to integrate the torch songs that he experimented with on ***"Vauxhall and I"*** with the indie rock of his earlier career.
However, this release caused a small amount of controversy over what was to be the penultimate track, ***"Sorrow Will Come in the End"*** which is clearly about the ***Mike Joyce*** royalties dispute, and lyrically takes the form of, essentially, an extended threatening message to him and his representatives after loss in ***"Smiths"*** royalty suit.
***”Maladjusted”*** received a mixed-to-unfavourable response from critics. They're charming songs, but they're subtle charms, offering the kind of pleasures only longtime Morrissey followers will find irresistible.
***”Alma Matters”*** is the second song on Morrissey’s fifth studio album ***”[Maladjusted](https://cutt.ly/4buvDDB)”***, released on 11 August 1997 by ***Island Records***.

***"R.E.M."*** was an American rock band from ***[Athens, Georgia](https://cutt.ly/NmRkghQ)***, formed in 1980 by drummer ***[Bill Berry](https://cutt.ly/AmRklXQ)***, guitarist ***[Peter Buck](https://cutt.ly/ymRkcq5)***, bassist ***[Mike Mills](https://cutt.ly/CmRknrO)***, and lead vocalist ***[Michael Stipe](https://cutt.ly/lmRkQn5)***, who were students at the University of Georgia.
Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern.
While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, ***"R.E.M."*** brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. The band marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock, and inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.
The band’s ninth album ***”Monster”*** was an intentional stylistic shift from ***"R.E.M.'s" previous two albums ***"[Out of Time](https://cutt.ly/pmPOH0J)"*** and ***"[Automatic for the People](https://cutt.ly/rmPPfhq)"***, with loud, distorted guitar tones and simple arrangements. ***Michael Stipe's*** lyrics at times deal with the nature of celebrity, and some are sung from the viewpoint of a character.
From the androgynous sleaze of ***"[Crush With Eyeliner](https://cutt.ly/smAFsds)"*** to the subtle, Eastern-tinged menace of ***"[You](https://cutt.ly/YmAGr5m)"*** most of the album sounds dense, dirty, and grimy, which makes the punchy guitars of ***"[What's the Frequency, Kenneth?](https://cutt.ly/gmAFoqO)"*** and the warped soul of ***"[Tongue](https://cutt.ly/LmAFfar)"*** all the more distinctive.
The album doesn't have the conceptual unity or consistently brilliant songwriting of ***"[Automatic for the People](https://cutt.ly/rmPPfhq)"***, but it does offer a wide range of sonic textures that have never been heard on an ***"R.E.M."*** album before.
***”Star 69”*** is the fifth song on the band’s ninth studio album ***"[Monster](https://cutt.ly/hmPAlbd)"***, released on September 27, 1994 by ***”Warner Bros. Records”***.
