Ambassador Michael Battle, former US Ambassador to the African Union joins me for a conversation about our recently published book on U.S. Africa Command.
Our book on Africa Command from Stellenbosch University and Routledge is finally in print, though only Bill Gates need order one in hard copy ($160 at Amazon & Walmart)).
"Expanding US Military Command in Africa: Elites, Networks and Grand Strategy"
Our book on Africa Command from Stellenbosch University and Routledge is finally in print, though only Bill Gates need order one in hard copy ($160 at Amazon & Walmart)).
From the introduction:
"Chapter 3, by Michael A. Battle, provides the governmental component of our investigation. As a former US ambassador to the African Union, as well as a former military figure, he provides a thorough explanation of the governmental part of the US machinery that provides a threshold for expansion. The chapter outlines the policies that make up a portion of the United States’ grand strategy in relation to other world regions and powers. It enunciates and contextualizes
the various executive decisions that shaped and directed US political and security policy from the Bush to the Obama era. Within this chapter, the reader can clearly see the role of elites using their various networks to give meaning and intentionality to various initiatives."
"In Chapter 4, William M. Wyatt, one of the founding senior officers in AFRICOM, provides an empirical perspective of the genesis and origins of the US Africa Command. The chapter outlines the rationale for creating AFRICOM from within the US executive branch of government. Most importantly, it provides a clear account of the challenges and opportunities faced by various US elites as they attempted to create the command. Simultaneously, he also addresses a number of controversies and misconceptions surrounding both the genesis and origins of AFRICOM. He attempts to steer the narrative from concerns about imperialism, militarization and accumulation by articulating the de jure domestic and international security concerns that drove the US elites to focus on Africa."

School teacher Glen #Snyman was charged with fraud for claiming he is African.. what a horrible thing to do. No not Glen's legitimate claim, but rather the South African government perpetuating racial classification to discriminate, 26 years AFTER the end of Apartheid. #ANC race based priviledge must end.

With President Cyril #Ramaphosa extending South #Africa's #lockdown for another 14 days, Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, #Nkosazana #Dlamini-Zuma announced the re-imposition of the ban on the transport of #alcohol to comply with the ban on the sale of it.
The unintended (or intentional?) consequence of this draconian restriction during the current #Wuhan #corona #virus, #COVID-19 crisis may be a death sentence for South Africa's wine industry.
First begun in 1659 under Jan van #Riebeeck, South Africa's #wine industry today contributes R49 billion ($2.72 billion) to the country's GDP. The wine industry employs 300,000 South Africans either directly or indirectly. Export sales in 2017 were $650 million. The inability to move wine to port for export is an especially hard blow for South Africa's #vineyards. Foreign buyers pay four times as much for South African wine as domestic consumers. With alcohol sales banned in South Africa, vineyards were already suffering But by banning movement to port, the axe will fall much harder on the industry.
What in the world is going on in #Luthuli House? Public health concerns? Sure. Stopping exports for... for what exactly? Public health holds little water as an excuse to stop exporting wine. If there is still a market abroad, then let them sell as long as the market exists, no?
