When I post the saxophone etudes every year, quite a few people ask me for tips on the improv etudes. I wanted to dedicate a special masterclass to this. Join me Thursday night and learn the keys to practicing and improvising over F Blues, Autumn Leaves, ii-V-I vocabulary and more.

Today, I was working with the student who was faced with a common problem: her high school big band is performing a piece with doable section parts, but unfamiliar chord changes in the solo section. I composed this etude to give her a starting point. Her band is performing Craig Skeffington’s bossa nova arrangement of “Naima” for an upcoming contest.
Justin Pierce is Assistant Professor in Instrumental Music at Oklahoma Baptist University and a Conn-Selmer and Vandoren Regional Artist.
