Titanic-The Relatively Untold Story What had the Mackay-Bennett ship got to do with one of the richest men in the world? And what had John Jacob Jack Astor and a poor young boy Sidney Leslie Goodwin have in common? The ship was commissioned from then noted River Clyde-based warship builders John Elder & Co., who incorporated a number of new and original features into a cable ship. It was one of the first ships built from steel, and she had a relatively deep keel. to accommodate as much cable as possible, and yet a design which was also very hydrodynamic to keep her fuel-efficient and fast in operation. The hull design included bilge keels to keep her stable, and she had two rudders, one fore and one aft, to maximize manoeuvrability. The Mackay-Bennett was designed as a cable laying and repair ship, that maintained the cables running across the Atlantic Ocean. A cable that would carry the message to commission a ship that for its time would be the greatest ship in the world.
