ElectroSound 7. Philips 138 Mistral Four Valve (Tube) Radio Restoration
This Philips 138 "Mistral Four" was purchased as part of a lot of 11 radio's that were going to be thrown in the skip as they were considered too far gone. I paid $150 for the lot. Only 2 are not repairable and have been used for parts. This set needed virtually no work to get it going. I replaced all the wax caps, and 3 resistors. I stopped because I didn't have any 24 uf electrolytic caps. I still don't, but I thought this would make a good contrast to the Philips BX 316 U of the last video. That radio is a very different beast even though they look similar at first glance.
It didn't go quite to plan, I should of read the service manual with regards to the dial pointer, and wasted a lot of time working out the lead that had snapped from the back of the potentiometer. (This I had broken fixing the power switch, and the correct position shows clearly earlier in the video.)
But all's well that ends well!
On another note. I am still waiting on lights, this will increase the depth of focus and stop the camera hunting.
I have a new lens for the ZV-E10, this will be the main camera from now on. I am also experimenting with different mics.
Finally I seem to have learnt the limits of the cameras heat wise. 25C. Quite a bit lower than expected as it regularly gets to 40C in summer.
Carl's capacitors and radio parts.
