Trudeau’s Liberals think that anyone that utters the magic word “refugee” must be an actual refugee rather than a queue jumper. There are real refugees in this world (millions of them) and Canada always has been and should continue to be a welcoming place for them but looking after real ones, requires that we weed out the fake ones so they won’t drain resources, clog up the system and distract us from helping real refugees. Back in the early 2000’s, the Chretien government signed an agreement with the U.S. to reject people trying to cross our shared border claiming refugee status if they came from a safe third country. I know because I went to the announcement by then Liberal Immigration Minister Denis Coderre. He explained why we shouldn’t be taking refugees from safe third countries - those that have rule of law, proper functioning courts, respect for human rights, all the things that we uphold in Canada and that we look for in allies and key trading partners. Now, after a group of refugee lawyers challenged the Harper government's revised rules and won at the lower level, it’s going to be a free for all again. The refugee lawyers want their clients to be able to file endless appeals, meaning more court time for their clients, more money for them, but fewer resources for real refugees. Taken together, by removing the visa requirement for Mexico, reinstating gold plated healthcare even for failed refugee claimants milking the system with never ending appeals - we’re returning to a system that only benefitted activists, refugee lawyers and bogus claimants. None of this helps actual refugees, only the connected and those willing to game the system. But for low information voters and journalists who can’t be bothered to look at the facts – it makes the Liberals look nice and caring and that’s all that matters to Trudeau - facts and reality be damned.
