Israeli Clowns Cheer Up Syrian Refugees | Have You Met?
Meet Shoshi and Johnny. They may look silly, but they are actually revolutionizing the way Syrian refugees see Israel. Johnny is a Christian Arab, Shoshi is Jewish, and together they work as medical clowns who cheer up sick kids and smash stereotypes one red nose at a time. Their work is hilarious. The outcome is no joke.
Their job is to make hospital visits more fun and less scary for Israeli kids (regardless of religion, ethnicity or nationality). As medical clowns, they can reduce patients’ anxiety, depression, and pain, making it easier for doctors to give them the medical care they need, and even helping their bodies heal faster. These medical clowns fit right into Israeli society since Israelis are known for their resilience and for being among the world’s happiest people!
But what’s even more amazing is that the hospital where Shoshi and Johnny work in northern Israel is actually close to the border of civil war-torn Syria. This means that not only do Israeli kids get some laughs in the tense hospital atmosphere but so do hundreds of war-torn refugees treated by Israel. This even includes Syrian children with sometimes severe injuries. Even more incredible - because Shoshi is Jewish and Johnny is a Christian Israeli Arab, the pair smash stereotypes and build trust in patients who might have had some really negative preconceptions about other races, religions, and nationalities.

After the death of Theodor Herzl in 1904, British-Jewish biochemist Chaim Weizmann was determined to carry out Herzl’s vision of international support for a Jewish homeland in what was then Palestine.
With World War I raging and the Jews of the Land of Israel, greatly suffering under Ottoman rule, Weizmann petitioned the British and persuaded many, including Winston Churchill, of the urgency to declare Israel as the Jewish homeland.
On October 31, 1917, Herzl’s dream came closer to realization when the British parliament expressed Britain's official support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine through the Balfour Declaration.

Although Israel planned to adopt a constitution by October 1948, the country has functioned without one for 75 years. Over the years, different opinions have been raised about the importance of a constitution which continues to be a point of controversy today.
To date, the closest Israel has gotten was creating the Harari Resolution. This resolution has been guiding Israel to build a constitution law by law over time as the country evolves. This started with the creation of the Knesset and continued with essential laws about citizenship and human rights which may eventually become Israel’s first constitution.

Ta’amei Hamikra, or as it’s called in Yiddish, “trope,” is a millennia-old system of music symbols that determines how each word in the Torah is recited. Although developed over thousands of years, this system is still used regularly today by Jews in synagogues around the world, as a guide to how to chant the Torah portions recited throughout each week.
If you listen to the chanting of the Torah today, the nusach, or melody, of the trope may sound different depending on what synagogue you’re sitting in. However, regardless of the nusach, they are all a part of a tradition that dates back to the Second Temple.

Anyone who opens the Talmud will see commentary written by Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, better known as Rashi. In this episode we explore who Rashi was and why his writing has been considered a “guiding light” through the centuries.
The First Crusade was a dark time when non-Christians faced the choice of conversion or death. Born in 1040 in France, Rashi knew from a young age that he wanted to be a guiding light for the Jewish people. After learning from the leading sages of the time, Rashi became a vintner, joined the rabbinical court, and then founded his own yeshiva at the age of 30, where he began to write his commentary.
Rashi wrote a “simple” meaning of the text, making the Talmud more accessible for all readers. Although he died before he could complete his work, thanks to his daughters and their families, Rashi’s legacy has survived and prospered. His wisdom has guided Jews from the Dark Ages to today.
