This German propaganda movie was part of a U.S. Navy archive compiled during WWII, and acquired by Periscope Film. Dornier bombers, and Blohm und Voss Bv-138 flying boats raid Allied shipping, and German U-boats are seen conducting wolfpack raids on convoys attempting to run the German blockade of Murmansk. Includes bomb attack by Ju-88 aircraft. The Arctic convoys of World War II were oceangoing convoys which sailed from the United Kingdom, Iceland, and North America to northern ports in the Soviet Union – primarily Arkhangelsk (Archangel) and Murmansk, both in modern-day Russia. Although there were two gaps with no sailings between July and September 1942, and March and November 1943, there were 78 convoys between August 1941 and May 1945, sailing via several seas of the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. About 1400 merchant ships delivered essential supplies to the Soviet Union under the Lend-Lease program, escorted by ships of the Royal Navy, Royal Canadian Navy, and the U.S. Navy. Eighty-five merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy warships (two cruisers, six destroyers, eight other escort ships) were lost. Nazi Germany’s Kriegsmarine lost a number of vessels including one battleship, three destroyers and at least 30 U-boats as well as a large number of aircraft. The convoys demonstrated the Allies commitment to helping the Soviet Union, prior to the opening of a Second Front, and tied up a substantial part of Germany’s Navy and Air Force. This 1978 “Report to Employees” was produced by the Sperry Corporation. The film is hosted by J. Paul Lyet, Sperry CEO, who gives an overview of the company and its many product lines. J. Paul Lyet speaks from the Sperry Research Center in Sudbury, Massachusetts, where work is being done on tomorrow’s products. At 02:50 we see inside a Sperry Univac Laboratory near St. Paul, Minnesota, showing the creation of memory chips for computers. Today’s chips are compared to the UNIVAC 1 computer of 1951, which had over 5,000 vacuum tubes. The Sperry New Holland divisionís TR 70 Twin Rotor Combine 03:33, Sperry-built ship simulators at the National Maritime Research Center in Kingspoint, New York; in Clearwater, Florida (04:12). At 06:55, several close up views of women using Sperry UNISCOPE 200 data input terminals in the Otto Mailing House, a large automated mailing house in Hamburg, Germany. 300 UNISCOPE terminals are used with this Sperry computer system. At 07:14, we see a large mailing house in the United Kingdom using magnetic code imprinting technology and a Sperry post-code reader interpreter, sorter. At 07:36, In France, one of the largest Sperry computer installations in Europe is an Air France Flight reservation system at Valbonne. It shows images of Hermann Göring, who at that time was one of Germany’s most important leaders and considered a national hero. At :23 he is shown reviewing members of the Luftwaffe. At :44 he is resplendent in his officer’s uniform. At :49 he shoots an arrow at an opening ceremony (perhaps Oktoberfest ?) and at 1:03 is presented with a beer stein. At 1:27 he is shown in Bavarian style dress, probably at his estate known as Carinhall. At 2:20 he shoots a rifle and entertains visiting officers. At 2:49 a buffet is shown. This is likely the 1938 christening of his daughter Edda Göring, who is seen with Goering’s second wife Emma Johanna Henny “Emmy” Göring (née Sonnemann) at 2:59. At 3:19 Edda is seen playing with Hitler. Airstrike From Anywhere is a short film about the new portable, temporary airstrip capabilities of the U.S. Navy. The film opens with a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter taxing for take-off. The F-104 flies through the air. The film shows the plane’s tail hook. The F-104 lands (00:51) on a temporary runway constructed of interlocking mats manufactured by Harvey Aluminum, Inc. At the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station in El Toro, CA (01:26), F-104s are tested on the short 2,000-foot runway. An aerial view shows the construction of the runway at the test site (02:00). Mats for the runway are laid in a brick-like pattern (02:40). Men adapt an F-104, giving it a tail hook. The F-104 flies through several touch-and-go passes on the newly built runway, then lands (03:50). Men film the test landings (04:08) with high speed cameras. A closeup view of the mats show the minimal damage caused by the landing of an aircraft even heavier than the F-104 (04:45). Men lay the mats down on a muddy surface. The film concludes with more footage of an F-104 landing on the portable airstrip. The Lockheed F-104 Starfighter is a single-engine, supersonic interceptor aircraft which later became widely used as an attack aircraft. It was originally developed by Lockheed for the United States Air Force (USAF), but was later produced by several other nations, seeing widespread service outside the United States. One of the Century Series of fighter aircraft, it was operated by the air forces of more than a dozen nations from 1958 to 2004. Its design team was led by Kelly Johnson, who contributed to the development of the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, Lockheed U-2, Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, and other Lockheed aircraft. The F-104 set numerous world records, including both airspeed and altitude records. Its success was marred by the Lockheed bribery scandals, in which Lockheed had given bribes to a considerable number of political and military figures in various nations to influence their judgment and secure several purchase contracts; this caused considerable political controversy in Europe and Japan. The poor safety record of the Starfighter also brought the aircraft into the public eye, especially in German Air Force service. Fighter ace Erich Hartmann was forced to retire from the Luftwaffe due to his outspoken opposition to selection of the F-104. The final production version of the fighter model was the F-104S, an all-weather interceptor designed by Aeritalia for the Italian Air Force, and equipped with radar-guided AIM-7 Sparrow missiles.
