1/16/1938 - On this day in 1938 quite possibly the greatest most influential concert of all time takes place as Benny Goodman the Clarinet player known as the 'King Of Swing ' and his Jazz band make their first appearance at the famed concert venue the Carnegie Hall in New York . It was not just the first appearance for band leader Benny Goodman but it is considered the first jazz concert ever at Carnegie . Also it broke barriers since the legendary musician ensemble that night was integrated in a time when much of the country was segregated based on race . The concert featured legendary musicians such as Duke Ellington and Count Bassie to name a few . Overall It was a major success and defined the big band swing jazz style that vastly became popular during the mid to late 30's and into the 40's .Benny would make another 2 dozen or so appearances at Carnegie in the years after the 1938 debut . The style of jazz Benny and his counterparts spread remains one of the best symbols of that era of big band music , it is timeless . Luckily the concert was recorded and eventually released years after the show , link to the full live recorded album from that night is below .
