There's an upside to this post but also, I'm afraid, a downside. Editors at T in the Park 2006 has long been a digital thorn in my side in terms of putting it together. Nowadays with events like Glastonbury etc, we get highlights shows on the BBC and on some occasions a band's entire set is broadcast. Sadly, this wasn't the case for the band when they appeared at T in the Park on the 9th of July 2006. Through still being a relatively new band at the time, their performance was overlooked by the TV networks in favour of bigger named acts. This of course would change by the following year, when they appeared regularly on festival highlights shows and often did TV/radio interviews at the time. It meant that if you wanted to hear them, you had to listen to multiple highlights shows on various radio stations and just hope you got lucky. Editors originally made their debut at the T in the Park festival on the 16th of July in 2005 when they played the "Futures" stage. This performance from 2006 on the BBC Radio 1 NME stage was streamed online, but the set is incomplete and the quality is utterly crap. No amount of squinting and pretending it's "not that bad" can change the fact that it just flat out sucks. So I'm not sharing it here. That, my fellow Editors junkies, is the bad news. The good news is that I have the full set played on the day in audio form, although I ended up having to collect it from different outlets. You'll spot the seams between the songs on occasion, but I did my best to eliminate it to a low level of intrusion. The pace is pretty quick on this set, none more so than during Munich which is played at a slightly faster tempo than usual, and contains a guitar sound from Tom in the chorus resembling a group of hornets getting really, really angry. A bona fide lost classic from 2007 up now, as we find Russell, Tom and Chris performing 4 songs for a private radio session in Sacramento USA. It's an acoustic/electric affair and sees Russell taking to the trusty piano again. This gig was almost consigned to history forever, because the station that it was recorded for technically no longer exists. "106.5 KWOD" ceased to be in 2009, and is now known by the title "106.5The Buzz" and all their archive material was lost. However, I happened to be in the right place with just the right amount of knowledge to prevent that from happening. The session is essentially a handful of people sitting on the floor up close and personal in a recording studio, (that looked a little like a high class opium den) getting to hear Editors do their thing. It's almost the kind of intimacy level you would get if you saw them playing in your living room. I know this will make me sound like an old nostalgia freak but I can't imagine anything better, especially considering the size of venues they can comfortably fill these days. I have a confession. There is a video of the session (see the thumbnail that accompanies this clip), but the stream quality at the time was absolutely abysmal. Pixelated to hell and audio out of sync. I'm good, but given the multitude of failings it possesses there's no way I can fix it. As such, and as much as it goes against every fanboy instinct in my brain, there's no point in sharing it here. That being said, the audio quality is superb and so the music I was able to extract is very much worth your time. Do I need to tell you that Bones sounds epic? That An End Has A Start shimmers? I suspect not. Rewriting history is not always a bad thing... If you're an Editors fan, you are familiar with the concept of waiting. Who could forget the ticking clock on the band's official website that signified the end of the An End Has a Start era of the band, that had us all so enraptured and infuriated in equal measure? Or that brief stall between ITLAOTE and The Weight of Your Love? Waiting? Yeah, we know all about that, thanks. I reference it as a concept because it is so applicable to this situation, it hurts. For the past 13 years we've had a highlights broadcast of Editors at Lowlands to satisfy and abate the regret of those of us who couldn't attend in person. Sure, we had a full set in MP3 form but there really is nothing like actually being able to watch this band doing the equivalent of hitting the nitrus and take things into a different gear when they play. For the longest time it was all but certain that this would be our Editors fan normality. In 2020, one of the many, many casualties of the plague-game that everybody is taking part in (regardless of whether you wanted to or not), has been music festivals being cancelled. In some cases, broadcasters have taken to offering up memories of events past by offering fans a chance to revisit some shows that have already taken place. It is as a result of that policy of sharing, pretty much 13 years later to the day, that we finally have Editors' full and complete Lowlands set from 2007. It was captured by Hannah, who has consistently been one of the biggest contributors to the Archive across the years, as well as running the band's forum online. Thanks again, H. Where I was not, you were ;) Editors and Lowlands have grown to be a great match up. In terms of entertainment and a connection between audience and performer it's always a done-deal. The set is paced very up-tempo, with the only truly slow moment coming with the mighty Weight of the World, which serves to remind you of its status as a total festival anthem. There's a one word lyric change in Racing Rats concerning who the dust settles around, and some guitar gremlins which cause problems for the late Chris Ridge during You Are Fading. Lowlands 2007 also that beautifully ambient, uplifting extended introduction for When Anger Shows with Chris' guitar looping over Ed's drums and Tom's piano. I know I enthuse about this in other videos where it happens, but my when eyes are both shut and the volume is loud, it honestly feels like the musical equivalent experience of riding thermals on a hang-glider. There's some light-hearted spots in among all the gloomy tunes too, such as Tom demonstrating why he wasn't chosen to throw the javelin during school sports day very often. After Bullets has finished he launches his guitar pick across the crowd towards the back of the room. It's a hefty underhand throw and seems to have a lot of power behind it. However, all the years of being sad and downhearted have clearly atrophied his arm muscles because the plectrum never makes it any further than about 13 centimeters to the pit directly in front of the stage. There's a instance of synchronicity straight afterwards, however, as he dedicates The Weight of the World to "ladies" just as a young lady in the front row is handed the non-traveling projectile from a security guard.
