1017 . Paul Murphy - 'My Children' (take 11 - fingerpicked) - parental ode of love to children
Fourth cut from Session 2 on my new song, an ode/eulogy to my - and yours, should you sing it to them - amazing children. As with Take 10, pitched slightly too high (especially for early on a sub-zero winter morning), but this seems to be most people's favourite so far, I guess for the feeling, more than the technical aspect, of the performance.
Over the course of the 2 sessions, I changed the song around to see how it worked other ways - first-verse repeat in Take 1, adding a chorus on Take 3, slowing it right down on Take 4, swapping the top-strings riff to a bottom-strings riff, finger-picking on Take 11 here, and more; if you wish to follow the evolution of the song, the video numbers run 1009 to 1020.
As ever, the sessions are nice and loose - hence the 4-minute shaggy-dog story before I actually start playing! tune up before starting? Just sing and get out? Work the new arrangements out first? Sacriledge. You've given me your time, so I play 'em to you the same as I would if you were in my front room, or in my audience. You don't get this with Adele, you know!

Session 2 on 'You Don't Impress Me'. I thought I would try this acoustic, after the tooth-n'-nail electric versions. That led into my daughter's beautiful poem, 'Where Does The Sun Go To At Night?' - which, karmicly, turned out to be the last song I ever played, on what was the last time I ever played the guitar - I awoke the day after and all feeling had gone in my right arm, shoulder down to hand.

Knocked out (unloaded) at a session this morning to try and nail my own 'Chasing The Past'. Any time I have an 'A' harmonica in the holder, chances are this won't be far from my lips.
Because when I used to play live - and I used to do this song a lot in my 'cover of the night' slot - I only used Bob's first verse, then took the tale elsewhere, I have, like, a hundred verses for this in my head - and seldom do I know which ones are going to come out!
This is kind of how I played live. Still would, if I wasn't in leg braces and fall over every other verse! And here, I am playing to the best audience in the world - my children. Albeit on video, and of them 6 years ago.

'Visions Of Johanna', words and music by Bob Dylan (although most of the words here are mine), appears on the landmark album, 'Blonde On Blonde', and in live form, on 'The 1966 Live Recordings'.
Sadly, the majestic 1976 live recordings are unavailable, well, one is out there unofficially, but the filmed Clearwater versions are still locked in tight and out of range.
Maybe someday.

Hi, thank you for viewing this video. This is a somewhat loose version of 'She Believes' - one string was out, but I liked the sound of it so I ran with it. I added a harder vocal than usual for this song. This is the un-ballad version. One of those great-to-play-damn-the-flaws romps.
There is another version of this (video 2107b), filmed from the room camera, and in addition to the alternate visual angle, it has a different sound mix. The 'G' is still out of tune, though.

Hello, and thank you for viewing this video. This recital is of one the works in my song lyric anthology "Compromise Not Pictured". This song was written in the late 1980s, then mislaid until turning up in the 'Lost Lyric' files in early June.
This is one of those trench-warfare songs, a direct linege from 'Like A Rolling Stone', 'Idiot Wind', et al. Hopefully the power comes across as a recital in the way it did as a song.

I revisited my beautiful daughter's poem 'Where Does The Sun Go To At Night?', trying out a new, (very) slow arrangement. This is one of the 'full' versions, starting with the original poem [verses 1 to 3] and then going into my additional verses to close. Emily's verses are by far the best, and are really quite allegorical and metaphorical, although I am not sure she knows that, since she is 9! I have no doubt she could put a better tune to the words than I did as well - watch out for her own YT channel somewhere down the road, I'm sure she will start one. I'm equally sure it will be spectacular.

I'm truly annoyed at the harmonica. Not only was it loose in the cradle, so I kept coming in on the wrong place and had to keep doubling back on the notes, but for some reason the camera microphone picked it up on its own, instead of auto-mixing it to the room level. Even though I am practically backing out the door on the between-verse breaks, it's still drowning out the guitar. Over to you, Peter Jackson.

Hello, thank you for viewing this video. This song is called ''Bitter Realities', one of my most popular social commentary songs (I appreciate that people refer to them as 'protest songs' but I always feel that's too wide a remit, one could say my love songs are 'protesting' about having one's heart broken!).
I tried a new vocal delivery out here, since I am playing the music at half its normal speed, so, trying to vary the enunciation as an effect mechanism. I'm not sure it comes off, but, barring the vocal monitor picking up feedback, it's not the worst take nonethless.
