John Michael Greer - Beyond Collapse: The Future of Civilization
John Michael Greer discusses the retirement of his popular blog The Archdruid Report, his latest venture Ecosophia, and the future of our civilization.
Over the years, John has written more than most and about as much as can be said concerning the decline and fall of industrial civilization. As the converging crises in energy, economics, and the environment continue to unfold, and politics plunges to new lows, he is making a shift in emphasis away from past paradigms and towards a spiritual perspective which may help salvage some meaning and purpose from the wreckage of our doomed society. Reflecting the subject matter of John’s regular column in the post-apocalyptic periodical Into The Ruins, we also discuss how the dystopian science fiction of the past presciently described the dysfunction and disintegration of the present. On a plastic planet of suburban sprawl, metastasizing strip malls, and streets paved with cheeseburgers, the fast food fantasy land where anything goes and nothing matters is fast going away. As we sift through our hopes and fears for the future and strive to see beyond collapse, can we somehow survive the coming storm?

Nick Duffell discusses his book Wounded Leaders: British Elitism and the Entitlement Illusion.
In an age when America elected its first black president and the Middle East stirred with popular uprising, Britons were again content to elect the products of their elitist Public Schools. But, their grooming for power aside, does such an education produce excellence – or expertise in self-deception and duplicity? The early 21st Century gives us some clues. Tony Blair maintained his façade of inner conviction but lost the nation through blind allegiance to the Establishment. David Cameron let his boyish mask of caring sincerity slip to reveal a bully’s attitude beneath his meritocratic pretence. A bicycle in Downing Street highlighted a deep-seated problem in Britain: a divided society caught in the enduring trance of the Entitlement Illusion.
Duffell argues that the British national obsession with sending the children of the well-heeled away to school has a major impact on our society, our institutions and our attitudes. He proposes that a cherished national character ideal, eschewing vulnerability and practising a normalised covert hostility based on bullying in the dorm adversely affects even those who did not have such an education.
This specific culture of elitism, protected by financial interests and the “It never did me any harm” syndrome, means that Britain is unlikely to foster the kind of leadership necessary in our world of increasing complexity, which needs cooperative global solutions. But worse, new scientific evidence shows that this hyper-rational training leaves its devotees trapped within the confines of an inflexible mind, beset with functional defects. Through the lens of the British case, Duffell presents a perspective on the universal defects of untempered rationality and proposes a revised model of leadership more fit for the uncertain future our world faces.

Grafton Tanner discusses his book Babbling Corpse – Vaporwave and the Commodification of Ghosts. The age of global capitalism promised all things to everyone; a world of techno-utopian fantasies embellished by endless entertainment, copious consumerism, and instant communication. As the 20th Century finally gave way to the 21st, corporate central control offered a vision of a future free from war, fear, and limitation. In societies increasingly devoid of meaning and purpose, we bought into the promise of this digital dreamland with religious zeal. The future, however, is turning out to be far from that envisioned in the ivory towers of industry imagineers. The events of 9/11 and subsequent years of the so-called 'war on terror', and the seismic shock of the 2008 financial crash and it's fatal fallout have left America, the West in general, and many other regions of the world reeling with no end in sight and with the milk and honey promises of the past in tatters.
Taking Vaporwave – a nascent musical micro-genre – as our starting point, we explore its parodies of popular culture, the changing face of a music business in meltdown, global capitalism's effect on art, the insidious side-effects of the electronic media which pervade our lives, the death of the old and emergence of new meaning in society, the burgeoning nostalgia industry, and our post-millennial obsession with a past which now resembles nothing less than a vanished golden age.

James Howard Kunstler discusses some of the issues raised in his books The Long Emergency (2005) and Too Much Magic (2013), examining how the global crises in energy, the economy and the environment have unfolded in the interim.
The last two hundred years have seen the greatest explosion of progress and wealth in the history of mankind, but the age of oil that fuelled this expansion is rapidly coming to an end. The depletion of fossil fuels is about to transform life as we know it, and do so much sooner than we think. Kunstler explains what to expect after we pass the tipping point of peak oil production, setting out to prepare us for economic, political, and social changes on an unimaginable scale.

Thomas Sheridan and Jason Robba discuss their documentary 'Liber Velocity - The Apotheosis of Jack Whiteside Parsons'. Born in 1914, Jack Parsons was an American rocket engineer, chemist, and occultist. Associated with the California Institute of Technology (aka Caltech), Parsons was one of the principal founders of both the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Aerojet Engineering Corporation. His professional career also overlapped with a decidedly unorthodox and at times controversial personal life in which the borders between science fiction, rocket science, and the occult blurred, and which involved associations with characters such as notorious occultist Aleister Crowley, Nazi rocket engineer Wernher von Braun, and Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. Parsons died in mysterious circumstances aged just 37 and the question still remains: Was his death an accident, or murder?

Paul Levy discusses his book 'Undreaming Wetiko: Breaking the Spell of the Nightmare Mind-Virus'. In the early 21st Century, the world is at war, with human consciousness the primary target. Although this battle has ancient origins, it has massively intensified in the modern era. Both 9/11 and Covid 19 were key tipping points, drawing the enemy into the open as the Technocrats and Transhumanists escalated their attack on humanity. The 24/7 media matrix and the human mind are the battlefields; fear, propaganda, and manipulation, the weapons. Reality has become a battle of perceptions. The militant materialism of our age tells us that all our problems can be solved with more government, more money, more technology, more control, unwilling or unable to acknowledge the deeper spiritual origins of civlisation's crisis. But it is into the depths of the human psyche and the true dreamlike nature of reality that we must look if we seek to find the terrible secret of what troubles this place.

John Bunzl and Nick Duffell discuss their book 'The Simpol Solution'. Although both parts of this interview may be taken on their own, it is strongly recommend that you listen to both.
Energy crisis, fossil fuel depletion, wealth inequality, mass migration, economic collapse, environmental disaster, political instability, nuclear proliferation, terrorism – why are governments and major international organizations so hopelessly unable to solve our mounting global problems? The truth is, that in an age of globalization, free-flowing capital, and banking without borders, government hands are effectively tied. Regulations or other schemes which might reign in the worst excesses of business and industry are rarely enacted or even considered simply because they would lead to cuts in corporate profits. Taken with the fact that governments in general are adept at drafting bad legislation, often operate a revolving door policy with business in terms of recruitment, and are themselves hardly paragons of best practice when it comes to energy, economy, environment or any other stress point you can name, we face an apparently intractable situation.
Some think the answers lie in global government and big thinking, others in localism and small-scale solutions, but while both are generally designed to sidestep bureaucratic gridlock, for many they smack of Communism, fascism, or some other ‘ism’ in which a largely unelected elite dictate the rules to everyone else. Through the lens of conventional politics, of whatever colour, it seems that we can have either unity or diversity, but not both. In the meantime, of course, our predicament continues to get worse, and as we look extinction in the eye yet again, we wonder once more, is there really no alternative?

Geologist Robert Schoch on his recent book Forgotten Civilization: The Role of Solar Outbursts in Our Past and Future.
Building upon Schoch's revolutionary theory that the Sphinx dates back much further than 2500 BCE, Forgotten Civilization reveals scientific evidence of advanced civilization predating ancient Egypt, Sumeria, and Greece, as well as the catastrophe that destroyed it nearly 12,000 years ago and what its legacy can teach us about our own future.
Weaving together a new view of the origins of civilization, the truths behind ancient wisdom, and the dynamics of the planet we live on, Schoch maintains we must heed the megalithic warning of the past and collectively prepare for future events.
Topics discussed include: global warming and climate change, the ice age, evolution, astronomy, cosmoclimatology, solar and plasma outbursts, ancient Egypt, Easter Island, Göbekli Tepe, megalithic monuments, the Biblical flood, Atlantis and lost civilizations, apocalyptic myths and legends, Quantum physics, and 2012.

Laurie Endicott Thomas discusses her book Not Trivial - How Studying the Traditional Liberal Arts Can Set You Free.
Why are there so many problems within our modern education system? In theory, our schools should be better than they've ever been, but growing numbers of people are embarking on their adult lives as functionally illiterate. Despite the best efforts of educators, much of the system is thus increasingly unfit for purpose. This has enormous implications for society in general, and politics in particular. Is this by accident, or by design? Are there hidden agendas at work? Upon investigation, it would seem that the true purpose of compulsory state education is less about liberation and freedom of opportunity, and more about control, coercion, and churning out compliant consumers and obedient workers willing to take their allotted place in society's hierarchy. When direct oppression is no longer possible, deliberate dumbing down will do just as well.
