# ***"Working Men's Club" Biography***
Hailing from ***Todmorden*** in ***West Yorkshire***, ***England***, the ***“Working Men’s Club”*** were formed in mid-2018 by vocalist/guitarist ***[Sydney Minsky-Sargeant](https://cutt.ly/IQD6Ozs)***, guitarist ***[Giulia Bonometti](https://cutt.ly/yQD6Edl)***, and drummer ***[Jake Bogacki](https://cutt.ly/OQD6Yj2)*** when the trio were still in their late teens.
They built a following thanks to their electric live shows and ***Minsky-Sargeant's*** skills as a cheekily opinionated frontperson.
After releasing a single heavily influenced by guitar-based post-punk, 2019's ***"Bad Blood"***, ***“Working Men's Club”*** signed to ***[Heavenly Records](https://cutt.ly/9QDLrI8)***.
Around this time, ***Minsky-Sargeant's***desire to switch away from making guitar music in favor of a more electronic sound alienated the rest of the band. The conflict came to a head less than a week before a concert in London; ***Bonometti*** left the band to devote time to her ***Juila Bardo*** project and ***Bogacki*** just left. Recently added bassist ***[Liam Ogburn](https://cutt.ly/jQD6lP8)*** stayed on, and the duo were joined for the concert by multi-instrumentalists ***Mairead O'Connor*** of ***[Moonlandingz](https://cutt.ly/uQD5JQ8)*** and ***Rob Graham*** of ***[Drenge](https://cutt.ly/AQD5NKb)***, both of whom ***Minsky-Sargeant*** had met at the ***Sheffield studio*** of producer ***[Ross Orton](https://cutt.ly/VQDJPSp)***.
> This lineup stayed together, and with Orton in the producer's chair, recorded ***“Working Men's Club's”*** first album, capturing a sound that switched out those moody guitars for chaotic synths, providing a more colourful, dynamic palette to pull from.
>
> The ten-tracks that make up their self-titled debut are all different, thankfully, but share the same brilliance.
Hope, despair, destruction and the desire for new beginnings, their chaotic energy makes perfect sense in these strange times (***"[NME](https://www.nme.com/)"***).

# ***"Lush" Biography***
One of the first bands to have been described with the *"shoegazing"* label, were an English alternative band formed in ***[London](https://cutt.ly/GQCIBch)*** in 1987. The original ***“Lush”*** line-up consisted of ***[Miki Berenyi](https://cutt.ly/4QCI0hj)*** (vocals, guitar), ***[Emma Anderson](https://cutt.ly/pQCI94G)*** (vocals, guitar), ***[Steve Rippon](https://cutt.ly/5QCObEV)*** (bass) and ***[Chris Acland](https://cutt.ly/aQCI4A2)*** (drums).
***[Phil King](https://cutt.ly/gQCOh1X)*** replaced ***Rippon*** in 1991. ***Meriel Barham***, the original lead vocalist left almost immediately, eventually joining ***“[Pale Saints](https://cutt.ly/NQC1jGo)”***. When a replacement could not be found, guitarist ***Miki*** stepped up to the mic.
The band, initially named the ***"Baby Machines"***, were inspired by the garage rock scene of the ***"[Nuggets](https://cutt.ly/hQC0sUW)”*** series", ***"[Cocteau Twins](https://cutt.ly/bQC0hPF)"***, ***"[Siouxsie and the Banshees](https://cutt.ly/cQC0c8G)"***, the ***"[Beach Boys](https://cutt.ly/bQC0S95)"*** and the ***''[Byrds](https://cutt.ly/hQC0G0V)``***.
By the time of their final album, 1996's ***"[Lovelife](https://cutt.ly/nQBKh2r)"***, they had converted themselves into a power pop band with dream pop overtones, which resulted in the greatest chart success of their career. That success was dealt a blow when drummer ***Chris Acland*** committed suicide in the fall of 1996, effectively bringing the band to an end.
On paper the ***[Guthrie](https://cutt.ly/uQM3S4g)***/***Lush*** collaboration seems like a match made in heaven; however, this lacks a punch and balance that begins to frustrate by the latter half.
> As with much of the band's early material, on band’s second album ***“Spooky”*** guitars dart and veer all over hell's half acre - just as you hear a gentle strum in one ear, another guitar whisks by like an overhead jet, only to be grounded to a halt by a swollen jolt from some netherworld.
>
> Shortly after the release of their debut album, ***“Spooky”***, ***“Lush”*** were invited to play ***[Lollapalooza's](https://cutt.ly/wQBJJsH)*** mainstage by ***[Perry Farrell](https://cutt.ly/NQBJLPJ)*** himself. It helped the London quartet break through stateside, but was still a less-than-likely festival booking - because, unlike other rock records of the early 1990s, “Spooky” doesn't rely on blistering noise to make its points. Its brilliant intricacies remain best appreciated alone, through headphones, and preferably in a room where long shadows creep onto the walls.
# ***The Song Info***
***“Monochrome”*** is the twelfth and the last song from ***Lush's*** first album ***“[Spooky](https://cutt.ly/xQBKoCu)”***, released on 27 January 1992 by ***“[4AD](https://cutt.ly/WQBpAgw)”***. The album, produced by ***Robin Guthrie (“Cocteau Twins”)***, followed the band's debut mini album, ***“[Scar](https://cutt.ly/5QBJjwP)”*** (1989), several extended play releases, and the compilation album ***“Gala”*** (1990).

# ***The Charlatans Biography***
***"The Charlatans"*** are an English rock band formed in the **[West Midlands](https://cutt.ly/NIvCiHx)** in 1988 by bassist ***[Martin Blunt](https://cutt.ly/9IvCmt0)***, who recruited fellow West Midlanders ***[Rob Collins](https://cutt.ly/NIvCItb)*** (keyboards), ***[Jon Brookes](https://cutt.ly/wIvCJVe)*** (drums), Jon Day (guitar) and singer-guitarist ***Baz Ketley***. ***Ketley*** left the band and was replaced by singer ***[Tim Burgess](https://cutt.ly/pIvX8R9)***.
Although the ***Charlatans*** would later become popularly associated with the *[Madchester scene](https://cutt.ly/YIb7ZuY)*, the band's early demos recorded in 1988 in *Birmingham* and *Dudley* already evidenced the sound that the band ultimately became famous for, dominated by ***Collins*** *Hammond organ*.
With their fusion of 1960s *soul*, *R&B* and *garage rock*, the band saw themselves firmly in the West Midlands tradition that included Birmingham bands ***[The Spencer Davis Group](https://cutt.ly/EIvVvS7)*** and early ***[Dexys Midnight Runners](https://cutt.ly/UIvVQUl)***.
> On previous ***[“Wonderland”](https://cutt.ly/aIv2Vs6)***, the band sounded like it still wanted to change the world (o, at the very least, the world's dancefloors), but on eighth studio album ***“Up at the Lake”***, ***The Charlatans*** sounds like its title suggests: a retreat and a retrenchment.
> There's a defined sense that this is the beginning of a new chapter for the band, and that ***“Up at the Lake”*** is their first work as "mature" artists. What makes sense, since the *britpop* torch had been passed on from the ***Charlies*** and their peers to the next generation (***[The Futureheads](https://cutt.ly/wIbM6HI)***, ***[Dogs Die in Hot Cars](https://cutt.ly/TIb1EiR)***, ***[The Coral](https://cutt.ly/BIb1Dlt)***, ***[Franz Ferdinand](https://cutt.ly/aIb1LIi)***, etc.) by 2004.
>
> What's here instead is the boozy barroom shuffle of ***["Bona Fide Treasure"](https://cutt.ly/WIbtS0b)*** British trad rock in the title track, and just a touch of the band's post-Madchester tendencies on ***["Feel the Pressure"](https://cutt.ly/WIbtS0b)***.
> ***[“Up at the Lake”](https://cutt.ly/rIv27Qc)*** is a relaxed and assured record, the work of craftsmen who know how to produce something solid and consistent. As such, there isn't much of a spark, but anyone who's bothered to follow the ***Charlatans*** this long, won't be disappointed.
