The relationships we have with members of other departments vary greatly depending on our role in the sound department. To a boom operator that lives on set, the closest relationships are very different than are the relationships between other members of the department. That said... to a boom operator, who are the Big 4?

Testing used microphones is imperative when you go to buy a used microphone. Provided that the mic you're testing uses a standard connector or comes with the right cable, testing shouldn't be a big deal but if you don't, you may be at a loss. It's not likely you'll want to drop $60 on a connector to make your own test cable or buy a cable to test a microphone with. In this video I'll show you how to make a cable to test vintage microphones with.
DISCLAIMER:
DO AT YOUR OWN RISK. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU DO WITH YOUR TEST CABLE OR WHAT YOU TEST WITH IT.
WARNING: Do not use on ribbon microphones or microphones with it's own separate power supply.

Welcome to the fifth episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. As you know I love recording on an external recorder but many people record directly on their computers. Is recording on the computer acceptable or should you record on an external recorder? In this video I answer a viewer's question about that very topic. Most people seem to think working in film is like any other job but they are very much wrong. It takes a special breed to work in film and in this video I discussed what it's like.
Audio notes:
As with last week, I'm trying less processing than the first two episodes. The audio was processed at 40.0% on the voice side in Clarity VX Pro which is slightly more processing than last week. What are your thoughts?
0:00 Intro
1:01 The Question
1:14 Can I record on my computer or should I get an external recorder?
4:20 What's it really like working in the film industry?

It would be so easy if us boom operators only had to know sound but in truth, we have to know at least a few basics about other departments and their tools and the king of them all... the camera. One of the big things we have to know about the camera is focal length. A 29mm lens may look like a 29mm lens but depending on the camera and camera settings, it could look much tighter. In this video I'll go over the basics on what you need to have an understanding of regarding focal length.

Rode has released many microphones throughout it's history and in some ways, Rode has been an industry leader in great tech for the money. With the release of the Rode NTG5 short shotgun microphone Rode once again is turning heads and making people stop... and listen.
The Rode NTG5 is smaller and lighter than most short shotgun microphones but don't let it's size fool you. It's a powerhouse in both it's sound and design. With it's very generous accessories kit, it very could be the next big microphone everyone will be talking about.
Many YouTube channels review products. Some read out specs and give someone else's opinion as their own while others do a simple voice-over test but you won't find that here. My style is to extensively test the mic meaning that I test it in many different capacities and in this video you'll see just that testing.
At 1:26 I say "the microphone measures 203mm which is right at 8 ounces." That should have been corrected to "right at 8 inches".

Welcome to the twenty fourth episode of the Speed Bumps Podcast. Have you ever heard of a thumper and wondered what it's used for? Thumpers are our first topic and for the second, we're going to discuss why headphones should be used by boom operators. Some boom operators in countries outside of the US still don't and that's a huge mistake.

This is a complex topic and one that requires I go into a bit of biology to fully explain. Yes, I could have stuck to definitions but I feel it's important to fully explore. That said...
Most people aren't aware that the human voice is so complex - almost as complex as the body parts producing it. As sound enthusiasts it's important to have an understanding of the human voice in order to help you understand how to better record it.
The human is very simple in thought but quite complex in application because there are many sounds that come together to produce every sound you hear. In this video, I'll dive deep and explain what you need to know about the human voice and some things as a bonus.
