Framestore Pictures Director Chris Waitt and Framestore Creative Director Andy Rowan-Robinson flex their creative humor for GEICO to mark the launch of Marvel’s new film, Eternals. In ‘May I Have Your Attention,’ the Gecko leaps back in time to Ancient Babylon where the immortal alien race are silently guiding humans throughout history, imagining what it might have been like if he himself was one of the Eternals. Addressing a captive, if not bemused, audience of townspeople, he explains the benefits of saving money on vehicle insurance (perhaps just a little ahead of his time).
The goal of the project was to place the Gecko in a historical setting, both as something fresh for the brand, but also as a way of connecting with the Marvel film which spans across various historical periods.
Alongside The Martin Agency, Chris and Andy were tasked with overseeing the project from start to finish. Bringing a cinematic level of production design, the scene was directly influenced by the film, carefully mimicking backdrops, props and costumes.
The Framestore VFX team based in New York worked their magic on the animation of the Gecko, light rendering, compositing and a final color grade by Steffan Perry in London. The Babylonian environment shots also called for set extensions with digital matte painting, including rebuilding the historical Ishtar Gate as referenced in the Eternals film, while the first and last shots were created completely in CG.
“This project was such a great opportunity for me to lean into my comedic directorial background while reimagining the iconic character of the Gecko in a historical setting,” said Waitt. “Working closely with the talented creatives at The Martin Agency on animatics, castings and edits, we were able to achieve a cinematic look and feel in line with the film.”
The spot will appear on GEICO's YouTube page, broadcast and digital channels. Eternals premieres in theaters on November 5th.
Reprising his role of Kingo from Marvel’s upcoming film, Eternals, actor Kumail Nanjiani jumps into the driver’s seat of a Lexus IS 500 to showcase a level of action and adventure fit only for a film sequence -- all in a challenge to find the perfect parking spot.
Involved from the earliest stages of the planning process, Framstore’s Los Angeles-based team collaborated with agency partner Team One as well as Bullitt’s brother directing duo Anthony and Joe Russo alongside Anthony Leonardi to bring the cinematic sequence, complete with Marvel storyline “Easter eggs,” to life.
Beginning with multiple units of shoot supervision, the team led by Creative Director Alex Thomas blocked out the effects distribution and destruction narrative throughout the sequence, inclusive of previsualization for key moments. Extensive scanning of the shoot location streets and parking garage allowed the directors freedom of coverage to leverage reprojection of previously shot running footage in addition to the option of full CG workflows.
Once the edit was locked, VFX teams focused on substantial environment work and CG vehicle requirements. They also added matte paintings and countless CG and practical effects elements to build out and enhance the various destruction scenes that Kingo drives through. Additional Eternals characters were also added in post with the team’s signature effects, including Ikaris and Makkari, along with sky replacements to reveal the core of the battle.
“Combining Marvel IP, Bullitt direction, beautiful Lexus vehicles and masses of destruction is basically a VFX artist’s dream scenario,” said Thomas. “Rarely does a project come along with such a combination, and an edit long enough to support an engaging narrative, so the whole Framestore crew thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The Russos and Anthony Leonardi are incredibly collaborative and passionate about every aspect of their craft, so it was an absolute pleasure to be a part of the project.”
The campaign will appear on cable during coverage of college football, NHL games and soccer, as well as social and digital channels.
