Historian Dr. Tammy Nemeth discusses the role of energy in global geopolitics. Alberta is rich in fossil fuels, making it a target for competitor nations or competing interests. Is the Tar Sands Campaign, which has blocked oil pipelines and smeared Alberta's reputation actually a "Green Trade War"? Dr. Nemeth notes it is important for Canadians to better appreciate how energy geopolitics affect us. She notes that it seems the Tar Sands Campaign will actually weaken the US in terms of energy security, especially as the US turns to OPEC for more supply, rather than Canada, a friendly neighbour with the third largest oil reserves in the world. Dr. Nemeth also addresses the curious 'stranded assets' hypocrisy of Mark Carney who claimed companies would go bankrupt, but then his company, Brookfield, invested in oil pipelines here and abroad.

In this Kitchen Table Talk #2 we consider that government-managed post-war housing, which had been a boon to troops coming home from World War II, became the subject of vilification by the 1960s with Pete Seeger's famous rendition of "Little Boxes on the Hillside." The song objects to the conformity of suburbia and the rather poorly made homes that were put together in a rush. Today, the federal government is proposing a similar sweeping plan to build 5.8 million houses by 2030. As outlined in "Blueprint," a report co-authored by a number of people including UN Climate Czar, Mark Carney, they propose that the new housing should be "climate resilient" and built to the much higher "NetZero" standards. However, Robert Lyman's 2019 report "Forget the Dream House" shows that this kind of construction standard is far more expensive than conventional methods. https://blog.friendsofscience.org/2019/09/08/forget-the-dream-house-how-net-zero-building-codes-may-place-house-ownership-beyond-reach/ What kind of quality will there be in these 5.8 million homes, rushed to market? How can these be more affordable than existing housing stock? Are we just creating cities that are 'all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same' - enforcing conformity on citizens, when after Pete Seeger's time, conventional home builders flourished with many innovative home designs in beautifully designed neighbourhoods with thoughtful layouts. Hans Rosling, the author of "Factfulness" said that "Fear plus urgency leads to stupid, drastic decisions with unpredictable side effects." Maybe we should think twice. Extinction Rebellion claim they are telling the truth about climate change, when really all they are doing is creating a nuisance of themselves. A recent stunt had them lighting a baby carriage on fire - imagine the emotional impact of that on small children! Then then have the gall to compare themselves to Martin Luther King, Jr. The climate catastrophe claims of Extinction Rebellion are those rooted in the latest hockey stick graph that is intended to make it seem like this is the hottest time ever. Sebastien Lunning, an IPCC expert reviewer, shows the Medieval Warm Period was global and evidence indicates it was as warm if not warmer than today. He has a scathing review of the latest hockey stick graph. It's time for open, civil debate, instead of annoying or terrifying street theatre on climate change. The Climate Emergency is over. We DO have time. Read Lunning's commentary here: https://www.climategate.nl/2021/09/wie-heeft-de-middeleeuwse-warmte-periode-uitgegumd/

When you ask a scientific question, you begin a voyage of discovery down a path where the outcome is unknown. If people say "the science is settled" or "we own the science" - that's the opposite of what science is all about. J. Scott Armstrong and Kesten Green have written a book titled: "The Scientific Method: A Guide to Finding Useful Knowledge." From the description of the book: "The scientific method delivers prosperity, yet scientific practice has become subject to corrupting influences from within and without the scientific community. This essential reference is intended to help remedy those threats. The authors identify eight essential criteria for the practice of science and provide checklists to help avoid costly failures in scientific practice. " Friends of Science Society are Friends of the Scientific Method. Science is about inquiry, not compliance. COP24 - the 24th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will meet in Katowice, Poland in early December, 2018. They plan to implement the Paris Agreement "rule book" and there's a push for a global carbon tax law. We take a look at what Canadians are already paying in carbon tax equivalents on federal and provincial fuel taxes - and what the rest of the world pays in carbon taxes. What would a carbon tax law mean for Canada and other democracies. Please read our rebuttal to the UN Climate Panel's recent IPCC SR15 report. https://blog.friendsofscience.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Faulty-Premises-Poor-Public-Policy-on-Climate-Oct-30-2018-FINAL.pdf

Throughout scientific history, people have searched, 'in the dark' for answers. Many times, people have 'found the answer' and then science and public policy continued on that premise, like a flashlight, solely focussed on a single theory. That narrow focus, that simplistic answer, is attractive to the general public who don't like uncertainty or complex discussions about scientific topics. Many times, compelling analogies have been developed that inspired people to take up a cause and follow a charismatic leader. Indeed, throughout time, from kings and their necromancers to peasants and their Tarot Cards, people have longed to know what the future holds. "The Answer" feels right, until you turn the beam of the flashlight to the broader picture. Once you see more of the complexity of a situation, "The Answer" is no longer adequate to explain the complex, chaotic forces at work in the world of climate climate. This broader view is liberating. You are no longer in the dark. You can see clearly now. This broader view helps us understand that there are many things beyond our control; that the alleged "Climate Emergency" is over and the good news is - We DO Have Time.

Friends of Science Society hosted Donna Laframboise as our guest speaker at our 17th Annual Event (online) on Dec 8, 2020. Donna pointed out that climate activism is fundamentally anti-democratic, undermining all freedoms, but especially that of freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is essential to open, civil debate and for setting sound public policy. You can buy tickets to watch Donna's recorded presentation and get tickets for Dr. Roy Spencer's upcoming presentation here: https://fossevents.ca/
