This is the way I buck smaller logs I'm unable to stand on. The log itself provides the back-up while making vertical strokes. Accuracy, always important in ax work, is more important when bucking near the top of the log as a miss would send the ax towards your legs.

If you haven't found NW Primate on YouTube, you should check him out. He has some really creative stuff going in Washington state. This was my experimentation with his side tunnel bow drill method. I used Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) for hearth and spindle, same wood bark for tinder bundle, and tarred bank line on the bow. The entire set was carved with an ax.
Here's NW Primate demoing the method: https://youtu.be/Klo8TNmuq1E

Cooking a hot meal on a cold day at fixed camp. I'm using two 6" stainless steel pails (two quart) with 6" pie pan lids and my old square cast iron skillet. I also have a larger 9" pail for larger groups at school. This is the Jack Mountain Bushcraft Pot System. Thank you, Tim Smith! I've pretty much replaced my other pots for this nesting system. For those interested, here's a link for more info:

Being a tick magnet, I wanted to test this new product from the makers of Burleigh Balm. I avoid DEET whenever possible but hate biting insects, ticks especially. BugShot did the trick on the ticks!

My buddy, Shon Blanchard, gave me four non-native fire-making materials to test - kapok (flash tinder), oakum, maya dust, and sotol (Dasylirion wheeleri). Thank you, Shon, for the gift of fire! Check out his pocket survival kits at @sn_limited on Instagram.

A few friends came over to party in the woods! Mike and Evan Newsom, and Bo showed up. I found a "bark spud" that'll save my back.
