Follow me for tips on ways to use your backyard bear (see description!)
Another, little known use, for your backyard rescued bear! Use him a crutch! Jim recently had knee surgery and can now use Leo to hold him up while they both exercise. Follow me for more tips on uses for your bear! ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZYmckHa3mA

We invited some of our long time supporters and helpers to name the squirrels this week and so we can now officially welcome Penny, Gigi, Rosa and Rikki to the Orphaned Wildlife Sanctuary. These four came to us after the tree they were living in was cut down. Some nice people hand fed them for the past two weeks and took very good care of them before finding us to turn them over to and finish the job and the release. All their eyes are open now and all are healthy and doing well.

Frankie was finally able to get his scan today. We have been super worried about him as he continues to not do well. The scan did not show anything of significance. They then sent a scope down his throat and found a great deal of inflammation. They took samples and sent them away to be biopsied. Two different doctors stated they did NOT feel this was anything cancerous, which is what we have been most worried about, so that was a tremendous relief. Once the biopsies come back, we will be better able to determine how to best treat his issues. Many thanks to Dr. Joe (light blue scrubs) and his whole team. Dr. Joe was simply amazing throughout this whole ordeal, and we were so impressed today with how wonderfully he handled everything. Thank you also to New England Equine for letting us use their machine and working with us to facilitate this happening!

Often, when we post pics of the bears in the pond we will get the question "why is the pond _______ (brown, green, blue etc).
Our bear pond is not an artificial cement "pool". It is an actual natural pond like you might come across while hiking in the woods. It's isn't a mix of toxic chemicals. It's just plain old rainwater in a regular real mud pond. Depending on time of year, the amount of rainfall (or lack of!) and how long and hard the bears have been playing in it (kicking up mud from the bottom) - the color will change.
Sometimes you'll see water coming from above. We use that as an added thing for the bears to play with, and to help refill if the water gets too low during a drought (like what we are experiencing now).
But we leave it natural and we don't add chemicals because that wouldn't be good for the bears.

Our little Vinny NuNu is making progress everyday. He no longer has problems with his limbs. None of them turn under any more. He is able to walk without stumbling. He holds his head up now and is more curious about his surroundings. Vinny is also using his nose more. He also reacts much faster to stimulus...he used to have an extremely slow reaction. We are now also confident that he is not blind. His only problem currently is that he tends to want to walk circles, and we work hard with him to discourage that and keep him straight. A good sign though is that last night he turned in the opposite direction. Excellent sign. Up until the last day or so we couldn't say he would even make it for sure...but now we are felling pretty confident this little guy is going to be ok. The big question you all have is can he be released again back to mom and siblings...and we simply can't answer that yet, but that is definitely the ultimate goal and what we work every day toward.

It looks like Ms. Squeaky has given up motherhood. She has not had any babies since last fall. She had her first litter when she was just one years old. She had a total of four litters one right after the other. A total of 13 babies in all!
