Rejoice, Doom fans! For the next official add-on for the console ports of classic Doom has arrived! This is the first add-on released specifically for Doom 2 since No Rest For The Living when add-on support was first introduced. Welcome to Back To Saturn X Episode 1: Get Out of My Stations! Back to Saturn X is a series of three Doom 2 megawad projects featuring an original soundtrack, new map textures, a new palette and other new additions. Episode 1 was initially released on Doom's 19th birthday, December 10, 2012. A new level was added in an August 2013 update which earned it a 2013 Cacoward. Episode 2 was released the following year in September 2014 and won a Cacoward for that year as well. Episode 3 is still in development. The biggest change to the console add-on release is the level names. The original release had the name of its levels, episodes, and title taken from song and album titles from American indie rock band Guided By Voices. The console add-on release changed all of those names, abbreviating the name to simply BTSX and jokingly expanded it to "Better Texturing with Startan X". Unlike most Doom 2 custom megawads, BTSX Episode 1 is not a full 32-level set. The game ends at map 25, and there are also three recurring hub levels and two secret levels. The first level, "Back to Saturn X Radio Report", renamed in the console release to "BTSX Contractual Obligation" (like a contractual obligation to remove the Guided By Voices references?), is probably the most brutal first level of any Doom game I've ever played! Sure, The Plutonia Experiment's first level "Congo" had tough encounters with Pain Elementals, Revenants, and Mancubi as well, but at least that level gave you ample ammo and weapons to deal with them. Here, you only get a shotgun and a chaingun for most of the level to deal with groups of Hell Knights and Cacodemons, but there is also a secret Super Shotgun that releases the Arachnotrons, Mancubi, Revenants, and Pain Elementals as well! I must have failed this map for at least 3 hours before I finally got this run. Map 6 of Sigil 2 is probably the hardest map in the entire wad. You start bombarded by Shotgunners, Imps, and Lost Souls on all sides, and it doesn't get any easier from there. There are also THREE Cyberdemons in this map to deal with (one guarding the red key, one guarding the starting area after getting all the keys, and another one guarding the exit), so you'll be pretty strapped for ammo by the end of it all. The idea behind this map is there are three different paths you can take in any order, each leading to a key. All of the keys lead down a fourth path to the exit. But each path has its dangers. The yellow key path has some precarious platforming over lava, the blue key path has some close-quarters combat with some tough enemies, and the red key path has a maze with a Cyberdemon in it!
