Depressed with the idea of his two hour 'Winter' solo condensed to a four minute song, Mick Taylor did not give up. In his new book ''I can't quit you baby, but I quit the Stones', Mick explains what happened during the Goat's head soup sessions in 1973.
"Jagger rewrote my DNA instrumental into 'Winter' and chopped about 59 minutes of the solo. Outrageous! It was some of my best work. I was angry, and took it out in a jam session with Charlie, Bill, and Billy Preston. Billy played the one minor chord, again a glorious D, which is really all you need, and we got into it. I stomped that wah pedal like it was Mick's face. Very cathartic. After 45 minutes on the same take, Charlie had to take a piss, so I took over the drum kit for the last 15 minutes. This wasn't the only time I played drums in the Stones, but I didn't get credit for that either. Charlie had a hard time playing to esoteric chord combos like D and A, so I would usually do those tracks.
The album version pales in comparison to the full unedited jam. Jagger would try to interrupt us from the console, saying he had some 'lyrics', and we would roll our eyes and say in a mock sarcastic tone, 'Of course you do.' We would continue playing until Jagger got bored and went home. It was one of the only times I felt like myself in the Stones, just letting the ideas flow as a jam band without being forced to always see Jagger's bony ass wiggling around, or worrying if Keith had fallen asleep standing up. Mick would come back hours later and yell 'Are you not finished jamming yet? You started about 100 years ago! I can jam as good as any of you!'
And that's how the song got its name. I finally agreed to let Mick sing his lyrics during the jam, but he just keeps saying 'Come on, come on, come on', like a loop, for the entire hour. After we were done, Charlie was like 'What the fuck? Come on come on for an hour? I thought you had lyrics?'
Now this is the best part. Charlie goes out, comes back five minutes later wearing his best suit, goes up to Jagger and really quietly, says 'Don't ever sing shit like that again and call it lyrics or jamming.' Then he punched him right in the face. I was shocked, but also happy. Mick went flying over the pool table and luckily landed softly on Billy Preston's afro. He was crying, his lip bleeding, and said 'I'm sorry! It's all I could think of. Jamming is harder than I thought.'

Here's a jam on one of their biggest songs (spotify ranking) and it got zero reaction. Hope someone out there appreciate it in youtube land! This was from June 3/23, the worst day of busking tips all year. $25 in 3 hours, on a Saturday, surrounded by hundreds of tourists, in the sun. It's truly impressive how bad it's getting in Vancouver. Live music died years ago, and put me on the street, but even out here, for free, there is no appreciation for it anymore.
Busking has become a farce, with people now actually miming along with ORIGINAL RECORDINGS and people film them!
