The 180 Degree Rule in Filmmaking (and Maintaining Eye line Continuity) #180degreerule
The 180 Degree Rule in Filmmaking (and Maintaining Eye line Continuity) #180degreerule

If you're a solo operator or part of a small crew production, this technique will save you a tremendous amount of time during the edit.

Let's go over a couple of examples of the 180 degree rule in filmmaking and how to maintain eye line continuity.

The 180 degree rule, which I'm sure you've heard about is where you draw an imaginary line between the camera and where the talent is...

You then frame and block your shots on one side of that line and you do not cross over it...

There are ways to break this rule, but we will talk about that in a different video.

The eye line continuity refers to ensuring that you talent is framed up in a way that makes the scene and edits smooth without jolting the audience.

Because when you force your audience to try and make the edit work it not only feels awkward but it takes people out of your story.

This rule applies to all types of stories.

Commercial Work, Corporate Video, Product Video, E Learning, and of course your own film projects.

In a perfect world and budget, you would set up with three identical cameras.

If you don't have three cameras, no need to worry, it would just mean that you will have 3 setups and your talent would have to go through the scene three times.

And the best part is that our talent doesn't have to be perfect each and every time.

As you know, in the corporate video world, we are often working with people who are not actors...and in some cases, people with very little on camera presence awareness or experience...

In this channel, we do more than just gear reviews, we talk shop, we are gear heads so we do talk about gear but we also try to bring value to you as a content creator, small business owner or young professional.

So if you're into that kind of thing, be sure to subscribe and ring the notification bell so that you won't miss any videos as they're released.

Until next time, I'm Carlos helping you compete in today's web economy.

I'll catch you guys in the comments.
