Escalating criminal activity and a youth crime crisis, homelessness and a cost of living crisis, tent cities springing up in public parks, a premier who doesn’t seem to be able to organise an Olympics: “If these are the Games Brisbane will deliver, perhaps it's not worth it”; “‘A joke’: Brisbane Olympics backflip slammed”. Here’s the 1928 Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam which could hold around 32,000 people. Here’s the next smallest stadium, Queensland Sport and Athletics Centre, which will hold 40,000 people after renovating the dilapidated stands for $1.6 billion, but only hold 14,000 after the Games are complete. The stadiums kind of look the same, except there’s about a one-hundred-year difference. “Crowded out: $1.6bn stadium to be smallest Games athletics venue in 104 years”. Anyway, these are just some of the reasons the Queensland public are losing faith in the Labor Government. On the weekend there was an election. Well, everyone voted in the local government elections, but there were also two state by-elections in Inala and Ipswich West, and Labor didn’t do very well. Crikey: “By-election loss an ominous sign for QLD Labor”; The Guardian: “Shock losses to LNP and Greens in Queensland elections sound warning for Labor ahead of October poll”; ABC: “LNP takes heartland seat of Ipswich West with heavy swing away from Labor; “Gold Coast Bulletin: “‘Totally tanked’: Labor’s by-election disaster”. All sides of the political spectrum agree, the Labor vote crumbled. In Ipswich West, there were huge swings against Labor to the Liberal National Party with their “tough on crime” message. With a swing of almost 18%, LNP’s Darren Zanow has gained the Labor heartland seat. Looking at the results, One Nation suffered a 3.8% swing against, with some insiders hypothesising that the LNP leader David Crisafulli’s conservative approach to crime and treaty has swayed some One Nation voters to the LNP. Although, One Nation leader Senator Pauline Hanson wasn’t too worried by the results. She said, “I am very pleased to see the back of Labor in Ipswich West. Overall, it’s abundantly clear there is an appetite in Queensland to get rid of Labor at the October election. The cost of living, escalating crime and the housing crisis are hitting people hard and they think Labor has no solutions.” In 2020, former Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk secured 67% of the primary vote in Inala. This weekend, Labor candidate Margie Nightingale only received about 37% of the primary vote, a massive 30% swing against Labor. Remembering, this is Labor heartland. The Premier himself had these words to say, “These results are clearly very bad. I was expecting a bad result, and they’re even worse than that. This is the voters of Inala and Ipswich West sending us a message…” The ABC’s chief election analyst Antony Green said, “There has not been a swing of this magnitude against a sitting Queensland government in all the years I’ve covered elections. It’s bigger than the Redcliffe and Stafford by-election swing that then-premier Campbell Newman suffered in 2014.” If the this swing of nearly 18% that we saw in the Labor heartland seat of Ipswich West was replicated across Queensland, the government would only have about four seats left. I’m not suggesting that’s likely, but just showing you how significant this swing was. The Brisbane City Council elections also resulted in a significant swing against Labor of almost 6%, with a swing of 5% to the Greens. Labor are losing votes to both the Left and the Right. Labor are in trouble in Queensland, and both sides of the political media are sensing it. On the Left: “The path to re-election for Queensland Labor looks like a narrowing goat track after its ‘Super Saturday’ losses”, and on the Right: “Queenslanders with baseball bats are ready to pound Labor”. Unfortunately for Labor, who have been in power for almost 10 years, they’ve lost control of the state with regards to youth crime, the rising cost of living, lack of affordable housing, an overwhelmed hospital and health system, as well as their relentless pursuit of their divisive Path to Treaty, which is just not popular among the Queensland electorate. So called “YouTube Premieres” (or “pri-meers” depending on which side of the lake you live on) was released more than a year ago now. It allows creators like me to “premiere” their videos. What does that mean? Well, it basically means that I schedule a video to be released at a certain time and then am able to watch it together with my audience. The Reserve Bank of Australia are predicting a potential 40% drop in house prices in an “extreme but plausible” scenario. Whether that will happen or not, who knows? But one thing I can definitely agree on is that housing in Australia is way too expensive. A new house in regional Queensland in a pretty good location which has four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a double garage, 561 m² of land, is selling for $585,000! To me, that sounds expensive. We’re not talking the capital city of Queensland here. We’re talking Middle Ridge in Toowoomba (which admittedly, is one of the more expensive suburbs, but regional Queensland all the same). This house also has a separate lounge room and an insulated patio. Another one in the same housing estate is advertised as being a “Glamorous Villa”. Basically, that’s code for “overpriced duplex”. They’re three-bedroom, two-bathroom duplexes with a double garage, and they cost $569,000 each. Yes, over half-a-million dollars for half a duplex. One half’s already sold. Sure, they’re nice, but I certainly wouldn’t pay that much for them. If you’re a first home buyer, you can currently get a $15,000 grant plus a $5,000 regional boost, so that brings it down to $549,000. Note, you can only get the $5,000 regional boost AFTER you’ve purchased or constructed your house. It doesn’t actually help you to purchase a new home. But as I’ve said in other videos, in my opinion, developers are simply tacking the value of these grants onto the prices of their newly-constructed houses. For this reason, I don’t think these grants are actually helping buyers at all. If we wanted to build our own home, there’s land for sale for $260,000 in the same housing estate, but it’s a bit smaller at 489 m². So in this video, we compare apples with apples by pretending that we’re buying a bigger block of land for $295,000 and building a similar sized house on it. As it turns out, it works out a lot cheaper! In my mind, I would never pay $585,000 for a brand new house in this area, or $569,000 for a “Glamorous Villa”. There’s no doubt in my mind that these houses are just way too expensive. This is regional Queensland for crying out loud. Not downtown Tokyo. What do you think? Due to rising cost of living spurred on by the over-inflated housing market, Sydneysiders are giving up on the Sydney dream. Sydney has become too expensive for the average Australian. According to the Economist, Sydney is the tenth most expensive city to live in in the world — by far the most expensive Australian city — and is ranked as more expensive than every single city in America. So what are Sydneysiders saying? Well, a lady by the name of Priscilla Meyer and her young family are giving up on the Sydney dream. She has been living with her husband and toddler at her mother’s house for the past three years in the suburb of Parklea. Parklea is about 1½ hours from the CBD, depending on how you travel. Due to high property prices and rising cost of living, Priscilla and her family are looking to buy in Melbourne, Victoria, where they can get a house an hour's drive from the CBD for under $500,000. Another Sydney resident, David Boyd, was once a high-flying banker. But everything went south when he lost his job during the 2008 global financial crisis. He struggles to find enough money to provide the basics for his 10-year-old daughter, Kali. He’s currently receiving Centrelink payments, but they’re simply not enough. Almost three quarters of his payments are swallowed up paying the rent for his small two-bedroom flat that he shares with his daughter in Penshurst in Sydney’s south. His daughter has a skin condition and requires special serums and oils, but these are not covered under the Australian Government’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme as they are non-prescription. In March, there will be state elections in New South Wales and parties are making lots of campaign promises to improve housing affordability. But according to the head of the NSW Council of Social Service, Joanna Quilty, these measures will simply not help the people who need help the most. The New South Wales economy is actually booming at the moment, but public housing is severely lacking. There were 60,000 people waiting for public housing at the end of last financial year, and Ms Quilty has been trying to urge the State Government to do something about it. With regards to the Federal Government, she states that they really have the power to improve these people’s lives through increased Centrelink payments. At the Federal level, the Australian Labor Party is promising a review of welfare payments if elected, but has not committed to increasing them. The current government says its focus is on helping unemployed people move into the workforce, but obviously, for a person in the 50s or 60s, this is easier said than done.
