In this video we prove some more fundamental trig identities to add to the ones we learnt in the last 2 videos;
sin2 ? + cos2 ? = 1
1 + tan2 ? = sec2 ?
1 + cot2 ? = csc2 ?
The significance of an identity is that, in calculation, we may replace either member with the other. We use an identity to give an expression a more convenient form. In calculus and all its applications, the trigonometric identities are of central importance.
Some other identities include;
sin2 θ = 1 − cos2 θ
cos2 θ = 1 − sin2 θ
tan2 θ + 1 = sec2 θ
tan2 θ = sec2 θ − 1
cot2 θ + 1 = csc2 θ
cot2 θ = csc2 θ − 1
