In January of 2024, gas and electric companies in China were asked by the Communist Party to change their meters. Since then, it has been discovered that energy companies have been inflating the gas and electric usage of their customers, a practice which they and the government are denying. Chen Guangcheng suspects that this is part of the government's strategy to get more money from its citizens, given China's current economic woes.
