We'll Make You A Star - 2020 Demo of a song I wrote in 1998
I wrote this little ditty back in 1998 when I was going to college in Missouri. I recorded it on a basic demo tape, had it copyrighted with the help of the music department at the university, and never really did anything more with it. It was always hard to find bands who wanted to do original stuff and work hard.
I got into a decent band and was considering introducing this song to them eventually. But, the narcissist I was dating (and lived with) kicked me and my kids out of her apartment so she could move a guy in that she met over the Internet. The exact same reason my divorce happened. It stunned the kids and I. We had it happen to us twice! So, the song stayed dormant. I totally forgot about this tune and was just messing around on my Samick Torino TR1 and thinking of doing a Cars tune when I remembered it! It was very much a mix of Bowie style - if sung by Roger Waters. Haha!

The other day, I got ACCUSED of 'hiding bad tone' behind the recordings of the songs I cover. It didn't matter that I often play the guitar before or after a song to demo the tone. This person picked out one of the songs I didn't.
So, this is to show people who DOUBT MY ABILITY that I can - and do - recreate nearly EXACT tones of expensive guitars with my budget guitars. On this one, I match the tone of Peter Frampton's beloved 'Phoenix' (Gibson Les Paul Custom 'Black Beauty') with my beat-up, slightly modified, $78 Samick Torino TR1 ('Greg Bennett designed').
PLEASE REMEMBER THIS: NO, you DON'T need a $1000+ guitar to have quality sound and playability. And you CAN match $1000+ guitars with budget guitars. It's not a pipe dream. It's not 'wishful thinking'. It's REAL. You can hear it for YOURSELF!
"Somethin's Happening" is the title song for Peter Frampton's 1974 album and is written by Peter Frampton. THIS version is from the 1976 album "Frampton Comes Alive!".
SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: Samick Torino TR1 'Greg Bennett designed' - SG copy designed by former top Gibson guitar tech Greg Bennett. It has the changes he wanted to put into the Gibson SG that Gibson wouldn't let him do - Bought on LetGo in August 2019 for $50. Upgraded the bridge pickup a few months later with a $18 'High Output' humbucker from Guitar Madness. Added custom Fret Inlay stickers for $10 in 2020.

Meet my NEW Epiphone Les Paul Classic Worn! I was debating on a new guitar to pick up this fall and I decided to sell my Jackson Flying V (not really a Flying V guy anymore) and get the money to start the process of buying this. It arrived today. I did a full set-up on it, did the fret 'fall-off' for low action on high leads, and changed the strings. It's awesome! Everything works as it should and I can't wait to be playing all my favorite stuff on it - like Boston, KISS, Styx, Foreigner, etc.!!
'Subdivisions' is from Rush's 1982 album 'Signals'. The words are written by 'The Professor' Neil Peart. And the music is written by Alex 'Lerxst' Lifeson and Geddy Lee.
NOTE: I make ALL of my amp sim presets from scratch unless otherwise noted. I like to research and match guitar/album/band tones as closely as I can get them. I'm ALWAYS tinkering with them - even after I make them!
SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: Epiphone Les Paul Classic Worn - Named 'Purple Wen' for a close friend as kind of a goof! - Bought from zZounds.com on their pay-as-you-play plan (which is how I buy EVERYTHING from them). This guitar is STOCK. No upgrades. Just a full-setup, new strings, and some fret work to get that low action on high leads. That's it! It's AWESOME!

SPECIAL NOTE: THIS IS PART ONE
Here's how I've been practicing lately. It's a little mini-concert/medley of Boston songs from "Don't Look Back" and the first album. Some Boston songs were mastered at different speeds for the albums. So, some songs are down in tuning to what I call a 'half step' which ISN'T really a half step (E to Eb). It's down 10 cents on the tuner. So, bear that in mind, please!
ALL songs belong to Boston and Tom Scholz.
SONGS:
Feelin' Satisfied
Don't Look Back
Rock And Roll Band
SPECIAL NOTE: Sorry for the mishap at the beginning of 'Rock And Roll Band' I had to change presets from the '78 Soldano Boston preset to the '76 one. Nobody's perfect! LOL! The rest came out so good that I left it. The show MUST go on!
SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: Firefly Les Paul 'Classic' Goldtop - Sent to me by Firefly as a replacement for a defective (but, now REPAIRED) Les Paul 'Elite' that I bought. I threw a mirror pickguard on it. It needs no other upgrades - at least right now. The pickups are nice and clear and - to me - sound like Alnico II humbuckers. Works for me!

I wanted to see if the Audiority Solidus VS8100 could match those classic Marshall tones in Peter Frampton's very famous live album: Frampton Comes Alive. And, I think it did! It's nice and clear on the solos especially! I could probably EQ it a bit better - but, I wanted it to stand out a bit for the test.
"Something's Happening" is from Peter Frampton's 1976 live album "Frampton Comes Alive!" and is written by Peter Frampton.
SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: Monoprice/Indio 66 DLX Plus (Les Paul Goldtop). Given to me in 2020 by Monoprice in exchange for 3 'jamming' videos that they could put up on their social media. I was not then, and am not now, sponsored by Monoprice. It was a one-shot deal. And, I got an awesome guitar out of it! UPGRADED in March 2021 with Guitar Madness 'Hight Output' humbuckers (DiMarzio Super Distortion copies/hexbuckers). They sound excellent!

Decided to break out the Dean Vendetta XMT and do a little Foo-ing around! Here's the fabulous 'Everlong' from the 1997 Foo Fighters album 'The Colour And The Shape' written by Dave 'Fresh Pots' Grohl.
SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: Dean Vendetta XMT - Bought for $200 from zZounds.com back in mid 2019. Modified with a $18 Guitar Madness 'High Output' (Hexbucker) pickup at the bridge. This lightweight guitar is now quite beastly!

When I saw this Overloud TH-U plugin get announced I was VERY interested! Then, it came out for an introductory price of less than $30 and I had to get it! It's not bad. I still have a lot of learning to do with it. I tried some Boston with it. But, for the first two album's songs, it doesn't sound right. My presets for those albums sound better. I gotta try this on the 1986 (and newer) Boston stuff. In time. NOTE: The CHORUS/DELAY isn't on. The SETTINGS I had match the picture. The O/D pedal is for extra bite.
'Rough Boy' is from ZZ Top's 1985 album 'Afterburner' and is written by Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard
SPECIAL NOTE: I IMPROVISE a lot of the solos. If that bugs you, I don't know what to tell you. I like to put my own spin on things, sometimes, while staying within the framework of the song.

SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: IYV ILS-300 Les Paul acquired in a local trade. All this one cost me was a couple practice amps and some other stuff. It's an EXCELLENT guitar! It was well taken care of and all I had to do was set it to my specs and put my 9-gauge strings on it. The 'Destiny CNC-wound' pickups are as awesome as they are on my IYV PRS copy!
GUITAR UPGRADES (1/28/22): Guyker locking tuners (gold), MusicLily bridge + stop-tail (gold), and speed knobs.

Well, there's a first time for everything. I snapped the high E string (thinnest one) on that last solo run during the fade-out! But, I kept goin', dang it! THAT'S dedication for ya! hahaha! This is an awesome song and the take was decent. So, I kept the string break in for your amusement!
'Just The Same Way' is from Journey's 1979 album 'Evolution' and is written by Gregg Rollie, Neal Schon, and Ross Vallory. Gregg Rollie, the original singer of Journey before Steve Perry, sings the main lead vocal in the song - with Steve Perry doing the answering lines during the chorus.
SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: Firefly 'Elite' Les Paul Custom (named 'Maddie') - Bought from Guitars Garden for $210 shipped! It came to me in a defective state. I gave it a full fret leveling, put a new GraphTech Tusq nut on it, put GraphTech 'RATIO' Locking Tuners on it, and now 'Maddie' is AWESOME! The new nut almost fully fixed the intonation problems I was having. Sure, it's not perfect. But, it's intonated! The guitar plays and feels like THE best Les Pauls I've ever played now - including the many Gibsons I've played.
No, I don't care if you disagree with that.

And, of course, it does Van Halen! Since some of the tracks on Van Halen's first album were done with a Les Paul, I guess it's no surprise!
"Runnin' With The Devil" is from Van Halen's 1978 debut album and is written by Edward Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony, and David Lee Roth.
SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: SX Callisto Les Paul Custom Goldtop. I found this one in my local classifieds for $150. I'd never seen a Goldtop Les Paul Custom before. So, I jumped at the chance! What a guitar! It was taken care of VERY well! I didn't have to do ANYTHING to it at all. It was ready to go!

Gotta love that 80's Strat tone! This is an awesome song - one of my all-time favorites. It's up there with 'Drive', in my opinion, as far as Ben Orr songs go! Please don't mind the goofing off after the song at the end. I hear that 80s Strat tone and, immediately, a song pops in my head about a girl who's not my lover - but claims that she is the one.
'Stay The Night' is from Benjamin Orr's 1986 album and is written by Benjamin Orr and Diane Grey Page. A great song from a man who left us FAR too early!
SIGNAL CHAIN:
GUITAR: Glarry GST Strat - Bought for $50 on Ebay. I put $25 of parts into upgrading it (including a $18 YiBuy loaded pickguard) and a little over an hour of my time installing it, shimming the neck, and filing 3 frets. $75 later and I have a guitar that sounds/feels/plays just as well as a Fender! (And, contrary to claims by 'certain people', it didn't fall apart in a year!)
