# ***"Lush" Biography***
One of the first bands to have been described with the *"shoegazing"* label, were an English alternative band formed in ***[London](https://cutt.ly/GQCIBch)*** in 1987. The original ***“Lush”*** line-up consisted of ***[Miki Berenyi](https://cutt.ly/4QCI0hj)*** (vocals, guitar), ***[Emma Anderson](https://cutt.ly/pQCI94G)*** (vocals, guitar), ***[Steve Rippon](https://cutt.ly/5QCObEV)*** (bass) and ***[Chris Acland](https://cutt.ly/aQCI4A2)*** (drums).
***[Phil King](https://cutt.ly/gQCOh1X)*** replaced ***Rippon*** in 1991. ***Meriel Barham***, the original lead vocalist left almost immediately, eventually joining ***“[Pale Saints](https://cutt.ly/NQC1jGo)”***. When a replacement could not be found, guitarist ***Miki*** stepped up to the mic.
The band, initially named the ***"Baby Machines"***, were inspired by the garage rock scene of the ***"[Nuggets](https://cutt.ly/hQC0sUW)”*** series", ***"[Cocteau Twins](https://cutt.ly/bQC0hPF)"***, ***"[Siouxsie and the Banshees](https://cutt.ly/cQC0c8G)"***, the ***"[Beach Boys](https://cutt.ly/bQC0S95)"*** and the ***''[Byrds](https://cutt.ly/hQC0G0V)``***.
Meshing dreamy, feedback-drenched guitars with airy, catchy melodies, ***“Lush”*** earned a cult following within the British and American undergrounds with its first *EPs*, yet the group never quite attained the critical respect given to its peers ***“[My Bloody Valentine](https://cutt.ly/VQC0BPf)”*** and ***“[Ride](https://cutt.ly/HQC09p2)”***. Even so, ***“Lush”*** lasted longer than any other of their contemporaries, developing sharp pop skills as their career progressed.
By the time of their final album, 1996's ***"[Lovelife](https://cutt.ly/HQC09p2)"***, they had converted themselves into a power *pop band* with *dream pop* overtones, which resulted in the greatest chart success of their career. That success was dealt a blow when drummer ***Chris Acland*** committed suicide in the fall of 1996, effectively bringing the band to an end.
> Thanks to ***[Robin Guthrie’s](https://cutt.ly/oQBpMhZ)*** connections, in 1989, the band signed to ***“[4AD](https://cutt.ly/WQBpAgw)”*** and released their first recording ***“Scar”***, a six-track mini-album. Originally intended to be a three-track single release, ***“Scar”*** was produced by ***[John Fryer](https://cutt.ly/rQBpUPm)*** and the band themselves and recorded at London's ***Blackwing Studios***.
>
> The album was described as having a distinctive style, somewhere between ***“Cocteau Twins”*** and ***“[Sonic Youth](https://cutt.ly/OQBpnLj)”***, as well as a mix of angelic vocals over subtle guitar trash, of melodies over chaotic rhythms, of haunting whispers over spitting feedback.

***"The Auteurs"*** were a British alternative rock band of the 1990s, and a vehicle for songwriter ***[Luke Haines](https://cutt.ly/JncuRe6)*** (guitar, piano and vocals).
Formerly a member of ***"[The Servants](https://cutt.ly/LncuIc1)"***, Haines created the Auteurs with his then-girlfriend ***[Alice Readman](https://cutt.ly/LncuIc1)*** on bass guitar, former classmate ***[Glenn Collins](https://cutt.ly/AnciuAS)*** on drums, and later added ***[James Banbury](https://cutt.ly/nncisTw)*** on cello.
At the start of their career, ***”The Auteurs”*** became associated with the Britpop movement, however this association was not liked by ***Haines***, who frequently made derogatory remarks about his peers.
Frontman and the group's guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, wrote highly melodic pop songs that combined the airy melodies of ***[George Harrison](https://cutt.ly/encihWZ)*** with the cutting social observations of ***[Ray Davies](https://cutt.ly/OncikOl)***; they were sharp, intelligent songs, full of humor and gorgeous melancholy, even when loudly rocking.
Preceded by the rousing electric guitar-driven single ***“[Lenny Valentino](https://cutt.ly/0nUZOqG)”***, the band's second album ***”Now I’m a Cowboy”*** is more of the same.
Wistful songs about a ***“[New French Girlfriend](https://cutt.ly/enUZSGG)”***, ***“[The Upper Classes](https://cutt.ly/qnUZYuU)”*** and ***“[Modern History](https://cutt.ly/5nUZEHR)”*** reveal Haines’ (and co-producer Phil Vinall’s) increasingly sensitive ear for a careful arrangement. The overall sound of the album is cleaner than the debut while lacking some of its energy.
Whole album served ***”The Auteurs”*** well, becoming an edgily delicious bridge between their immediate past and their enduring future.
***”Underground Movies”*** is the eighth song on the band’s second album ***”[Now I'm A Cowboy](https://cutt.ly/ZnUgxFM)”***, released in 1993. under the british record label ***”[Hut Recordings](https://cutt.ly/onciBes)”***. In 2003, ***”[Mojo](https://cutt.ly/snQngHd)”*** placed the album at number 40 on its list of the **"Top 50 Eccentric Albums"**.

# ***Sonic Youth Biography***
***Sonic Youth*** was an American rock band based in *New York City*, formed in 1981.
Founding members ***[Thurston Moore](https://cutt.ly/AOmudDl)*** (guitar, vocals), ***[Kim Gordon](https://cutt.ly/LOmujx4)*** (bass, vocals, guitar) and ***[Lee Ranaldo](https://cutt.ly/GOmuz5Y)*** (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while ***[Steve Shelley](https://cutt.ly/OOmubhc)*** (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up.
***[Jim O'Rourke](https://cutt.ly/eOmuRjF)*** (bass, keyboards, guitar) was also a member of the band from 1999 to 2005, and ***[Mark Ibold](https://cutt.ly/bOmuPsq)*** (guitar, bass) was a member from 2006 to 2011.
***Sonic Youth*** emerged from the experimental *no wave* art and music scene in New York before evolving into a more conventional rock band and becoming a prominent member of the American *noise rock* scene.
Their inventive use of alternate tunings, dissonance, and feedback, which they combined with the intensity of *hardcore punk* and the performance art aesthetic of New York's *avant-garde*, created a new sonic landscape with an impact that lasted for decades.
> The third ***Sonic Youth*** studio album, ***“EVOL”*** is notable for being the first with a new drummer, ***Steve Shelley***, replacing ex-***[Pussy Galore](https://cutt.ly/fOYcpxx)*** drummer ***[Bob Bert](https://cutt.ly/GOYxFxd)***, and for showing signs of the band's transition from their no wave past toward a greater pop sensibility.
>
> Though gift-wrapped in jagged guitar tones and airy alternate tunings, songs like ***["Green Light"](https://cutt.ly/JO2ZKzP)***, ***["Star Power"](https://cutt.ly/5O2Z8ue)***, and the hypnotic bliss-out of album closer ***["Expressway to Yr. Skull"](https://cutt.ly/HO2XeNt)*** are built on cores of reaching melodicism and a tunefulness that borders at times on sounding playful.
>
> A product of a band finding its way between worlds, ***“EVOL”*** is a remarkably strong effort, and sets the stage for crystallizing ideas that would soon result in what many considered the band's finest work.

***"R.E.M."*** was an American rock band from ***[Athens, Georgia](https://cutt.ly/NmRkghQ)***, formed in 1980 by drummer ***[Bill Berry](https://cutt.ly/AmRklXQ)***, guitarist ***[Peter Buck](https://cutt.ly/ymRkcq5)***, bassist ***[Mike Mills](https://cutt.ly/CmRknrO)***, and lead vocalist ***[Michael Stipe](https://cutt.ly/lmRkQn5)***, who were students at the University of Georgia.
Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional and modern.
While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, ***"R.E.M."*** brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. The band marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock, and inspired countless bands, from the legions of jangle pop groups in the mid-'80s to scores of alternative pop groups in the '90s, who admired their slow climb to stardom.
With second studio album ***”Reckoning”***, producers ***[Mitch Easter](https://cutt.ly/6mRcELA)*** and ***[Don Dixon](https://cutt.ly/hmRcYcW)*** wanted to capture the energy of ***”R.E.M.'s”*** live sound. ***Dixon*** was enamored of the **[binaural recording](https://cutt.ly/RmRUdor)** technique, and used it extensively on the album. In ***Easter'*** opinion the method made drummer ***Bill Berry's*** parts "fresher sounding". Binaural recording also allowed bassist ***Mike Mills'*** backing vocals to be loud without obscuring ***Stipe's*** lead vocals.
With the album ***R.E.M.*** abandoned the enigmatic post-punk experiments of ***"[Murmur](https://cutt.ly/6mPIH1l)"***, returning to their garage pop origins instead.
Where ***”[Murmur](https://cutt.ly/6mPIH1l)”*** was enigmatic in its sound, ***”Reckoning”*** is clear, which doesn't necessarily mean that the songs themselves are straightforward.
On the surface, ***”Reckoning”*** may not be as distinctive as ***[Murmur](https://cutt.ly/6mPIH1l)***, but the record's influence on underground American rock in the '80s was just as strong.
***”Second Guessing”*** is the sixth song on the band’s second studio album ***"Reckoning"***, released on April 9, 1984 by ***"[I.R.S. Records](https://cutt.ly/rmRk1BH)"***. The album was recorded at ***Reflection Sound Studio*** in **Charlotte**, **North Carolina**.

***"Elastica"*** were a British rock band formed in London in 1992.
In mid-1992, ex-**Suede** band members **[Justine Frischmann](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justine_Frischmann)** and **[Justin Welch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Welch)** decided to form a group. By the autumn of that year, bassist **[Annie Holland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Holland)** and guitarist **[Donna Matthews](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donna_Matthews)** were added.
Self-titled album ***"Elastica"*** is their debut, released on 14 March 1995 through **[Deceptive Records](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deceptive_Records)**.
It was not just Elastica's post-punk lecture of 16 songs in 40 minutes, but also a piece of music that consistently shines in a rocking and melodic way.
The riffs are angular like early **Adam & the Ants**, the melodies tease like **Blondie**, and the entire band is as tough as the **Clash**, yet they never seem anything less than contemporary.
As ***Simone Appolloni*** wrottes, Elastica are something rare in music: a jack of all trades. A band that can sound sweet, bitter, angry, dynamic and tender at the same time.
And sgain, Elastica did it on an ultra-short 40 minutes session! So, the band’s first studio artwork is simply an ancestral triumph of style.
