long-burning fires: White Phosphorous on Sheikh Rajleen
The Israeli army widely used white phosphorous on densely inhabited civilian areas throughout the Gaza Strip, including on homes, schools, hospitals and a UN storage warehouse during the 23 days of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip in 2008 2009.

Naim Abed Saed Shamella, 48, explained how when the tanks’ shelling in their neighbourhood, near their house, had gotten intense he moved his family of 10 to one ground floor room. After the missile hit his house, going through the 2nd story roof, he’d gone upstairs to get his cell phone. He entered into a cloud of smoke, noxious and lung-tightening. Three days later, when we visited we found the house by the smear of black burn around the upper window, blown out, of course.
The room, blackened, incredibly still had a small fire burning. Three days later. Instead of breaking down when it was poked, the fire flamed up, the toxic smell still strong, a mix of burning rubber stink and unfamiliar chemicals. I tried to picture a roomful, and imagined I’d have more problems that the chest and lung ache Shamella suffers. When doused with water, the fire revived seconds later.
Down the lane from Naim Shamella’s house, 68 year old Adal Saed Shemella stood in front of his own bullet and tank shell-ridden home, refusing to evacuate. “My children and family have gone, but I’ll stay, with my wife,” he stated. His wife peered out a second story window, nodding agreement. “If we leave our house, they’ll destroy it. When it’s more dangerous, then we’ll move to the back side.” He invited us inside to see what he said was even worse damage. And like everyone else I’ve met, he has no power, no water, no gas, no working telephone lines.
Down further, the father of Mahmoud Ahmed Shamella sat expressionless outside the steps of his building. Mahmoud was a business student, 18, and was killed two days earlier, crushed by a wall which fell after the missile bored through the 2nd floor of his home. It was 2 am, just a few hours before the martyr was to die.
The family of Hayssam Ashaq Shamella, 20, detailed his sudden death. It was 5 am and although Hayssam had been asleep, when a missile struck outside the house, he’d gone out to see the damage. The second missile followed, as usual just minutes later, killing him metres from the house he’d just left. The yard behind the house held rows of vegetables, trees, a demolished chicken shed, and more evidence of shelling: beside one of the trees, a shell from tank fire that morning.

Beautiful Damascus streets, filmed over the days of Eid.
As charming as these scenes are, I've had many tell me over the years, including recently, that holidays are tainted with massive sadness for those martyred and maimed by terrorists and in the fight against terrorism and to restore peace to Syria.
I always feel the need to note that these street scenes of tranquility would be impossible without the sacrifices of the Syrian army and allies, and that until the liberation last year of eastern Ghouta, and Yarmouk and surrounding areas, these streets were being constantly targeted by terrorist mortars and missiles, amounting to *at least* 10,000 civilians murdered in Damascus area alone, although I've heard higher estimates.

This June, one day after he went public to Syrian and other press (not Western corporate) in Aleppo, I spoke directly with the father of the unwilling icon dubbed 'the boy in the ambulance'.
What Mohammad Daqneesh told me starkly contrasted the corporate media AND White Helmet narratives on his son Omran and alleged airstrikes. These narratives were meant to vilify both Syrian and Russian governments, the reality was that neither were to blame for the very light injuries he and Omran received in August 2016, and that there was no airstrike on their home that night as otherwise alleged by the al-Qaeda affiliated White Helmets and corporate media.

Last night, I gave a talk on some of what I'd seen in Venezuela, March-April, sharing photos and clips--with an emphasis of allowing people to hear voices our media generally silences or pretends don't exist.
In Q & A, the issue of discrimination and racism in Venezuela was raised.
This eloquent Venezuelan musician replied to the question so articulately, and disturbingly, that I asked him to re-address it on camera after the event.
Do listen to his words not only on the racism that still exists (not only in Venezuela but in media portrayal of Venezuelans), that in the 80s there actually was a crisis, unlike today, and that the people won't let their revolution end.
"In 1999, for the 1st time every in any country in South America, a law was passed to not discriminate against people of colour.
People that never had a voice now have one and will never give it up again.
You can go to the remotest area in my country and everybody can read. Everybody knows their rights and knows that their voice counts."

Dr Khaled from Shifa hospital ICU told me today around 10 that the majority of cases in the ICU are critical, with an approx 80% who will not survive. The normally 12-bed ICU was caring for twice as many as normally capable, extra beds and extra rooms made to care for ICU patients. At that time, the 24 beds in the ICU were the 4th shift of critically injured, the former 3 having died from their injuries.
There is a critical need for more ICU beds, as well as mechanical ventilators
the majority of injuries were “multi-explosive injuries” with a concentration of head injuries (“head trauma”) resulting from the explosions, from shrapnel in the brain. Other injuries included abdominal injuries resulting in internal bleeding, from shrapnel in the abdomen. The majority of head injuries were not expected to survive, and those who do are expected to have brain damage, some full paralysis (quadroplegea). Because of the shortage of spaces and equipment, the ICU has had to turn patients away, others waiting in the reception until a patient dies and his space can be used.
among the critically wounded were a number of children and minors:
a six year old down’s syndrom with brain trauma
an 11 year old with brain trauma, not likely to survive
a 13 year old with a head injury (“brain matter out”)
a 21 year old, leg amputated, various shrapnel injuries over body and face, loss of hearing in one ear
a 21 year old, braindead, “hopeless” case
a man in his fifties, neither police nor resistance
a man in his forties, on the beach when struck, head trauma (“brain matter out”)
a man in his fifties, head trauma
a 53 year old, shrapnel in the brain, no surgery possible
many other men in their 20s and 30s, head injuries (shrapnel in brain), and abdominal injuries, some policemen.
