We had one little squirrel that could not be released in time and needs to be over-wintered. We were sad that he might have to spend all those months alone...but this week another rehabber posted about two that she had to over-winter, and now all three are here and will have each other as companions. This makes us so happy!

Little Melrose meets Norman for the first time. He is still a little frightened and anxious and we hope that having her with him can help them both recover faster. So far Melrose doesn't seem all that impressed. You might need to step up your game, Norman.

It has been brutally cold here. Down to about 5 to 8 degrees the past few nights!! The bears all cuddle together when it’s that cold, and it is so cute to see.
Many people ask us if the bear barn is heated and I will say that yes, we have the ability to heat it in there, but most often do not. Bears like the cold and do well in the cold. They have a MUCH more difficult time in the summer with the heat, than they ever do in the winter with the cold.
But yes, on super brutal days, we can heat the barn but if you do that, you’ll often find them going outside to sleep in the snow. Bears really do fine in cold weather.
This time of year we always get many people asking about hibernation. Bears in captivity do not truly hibernate. They do slow down a great deal, they do eat much less, but they also get up most days and go outside and wander around etc.
Frankie is probably our most “hibernating” bear. But they do still eat and get up and take a stroll most days and love to play and romp in the snow.
Also know that bears in the wild may not truly hibernate either. Scientists say they go into a torpor like state but that doesn’t mean they do not wake up, move around, and even go out. So don’t think you can wander into that bear den and be safe because they are hibernating. That is NOT necessarily the case.
But here, OUR bears do this...and it’s so beyond cute when they snuggle together like this.
Can we get a collective....”awwwwwwww”””?

We have mentioned before thatFrankie is our "most hibernating bear". He hardly gets out of bed and never goes outside. Amazing that he could walk on top of the snow. He was also eating snow! So this is rare film footage of our Frank, outside in the winter! :)
