Battle of Thebes - Campaigns of Alexander the Great (Anabasis by Arrian - Book 1, Chapter 8)
In Chapter 8 of Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander the Great, We come back to Alexander's siege of Thebes and we look what exactly was the tipping point to launch the attack, as well as the general progression of the battle.
In Thebes, statesmen exiled by the orders of Philip returned, and sparked a rebellion, calling for the people to free themselves of the Macedonian yoke and regain their freedom. With Alexander’s death, they were no longer bound by the treaties imposed on them by the Macedonians. They are right… aren’t they?
The attack commenced, though historians are not unanimous how exactly it came about. What followed was a bloody battle, in which the Thebans made a brave and desperate resistance for a long time, but were in the end slaughtered by armies of both Macedonia and their allies.
