Very few people on a film set have the privilege of being able to listen to the live audio being recorded. The Director, Script Supervisor, Producers, VIPS and Studio Executives are some of the few that will be issued Comteks, a portable listening device tuned to the production audio mix track. Also included is a pair of headphones.
The balance between quality and price is one to be considered and many times sound mixers spend a little amount of money on cheap, heavily bass boosted headphones that break after a couple of weeks. The other extreme is spending too much on a pair of headphones and those have a tendency of walking away.
Enter Halter Technical Scene Monitors - a headphone made specifically for Comteks used on a film set. They are light and acoustically flat allowing you the hear the production mix track without outrageous coloration.

If you're just starting out on your journey to become a voice over artist you may be wondering what you need to spend money on. Will a $1000 microphone be enough to get you work? Do you need expert editing skills? Do you really need to drop $4000 on a voice over booth? What's your top priority?
Let's take them one at a time. A $1000 microphone? Why does it have to be $1000? Can you not find an good entry level mic for less? Yes, you can so don't even think about spending that kind of money on a microphone unless you have it to waste. What about editing skills? While they're helpful to have, hopefully your ability to read and deliver an interesting vocal presentation means that editing won't be necessary. Or at least... really advanced editing. That leaves your recording environment and yes, this one is critical. You won't get ANY jobs if you're recording in a noisy environment but do you need a vocal booth? Not at all and in this video I'll show you how to make any room into a "passable" voice-over booth.

Cancel the Wilhelm Scream!
The Wilhelm Scream... You know you've heard many, many times. But do you hate it? I do... with a passion! I would even go so far as to say it's one of my least favorite sounds ever recorded? Why? Because it's overused.
It doesn't matter if it's someone falling off a cliff or a person falling into a swamp, it's used way too often in the world of film sound effects. Yes, it was used creatively in Star Wars: A New Hope back in 1977 as part of a fall but even there, it wasn't an acoustic match for the helmet wearing Stormtrooper.
In this video I'll go over the history of the Wilhelm Scream and then tell you why if I were to rub a lamp and be given 3 wishes... I'd contemplate using one to remove the Wilhelm Scream from existence (but wouldn't).

In this episode of Sound Speeds I answer a question sent in from a viewer. The question - are you better off recording voice-overs for a vlog with an external camera mic or a cheap large diaphragm condenser.
In order to tackle this video, I have to go over a few things that you need to know regardless of what mic you use. From the environment you're recording in to the tonal quality of your voice when you're sick, it all matters.
By the end of this video, you'll know how to determine which mic is going to be right for your project.

While it may seem too good to be true, if your environmental background noise is already very low killing the fans on your PC may further drop the noise floor in your audio recording. And true to what the title and thumbnail say, this is a fix that doesn't require you to process your audio in any way. Fix it BEFORE you hit record.
Speedfan is a freeware available for download that will allow you to easily control the fans on your Windows PC provided they are electronically controlled and not physical switch controlled. Killing your computer fans for the duration of your recording shouldn't overheat your computer provided that you are just using your PC to record audio and not doing anything processor intensive.
