Did a battery leak damage your camera, remote control, GPS, flashlight, toy, or other electronic equipment? Don't throw it away. In most cases, you can easily fix it. It is surprising how many people don't know the correct and easy way to remove corrosion from batteries that almost always will eventually ruin your electronics if left in too long. Also, people get batteries confused and use the wrong method for the battery they have. I think that stems from the fact that in the past all batteries were acidic based and people used baking soda to neutralize the acid and help dissolve the deposits. This does not work on alkaline batteries. However, a simple white vinegar will neutralize alkaline deposits. If the metal connections have not been corroded too far you would be surprised at the number of electronic items that can be saved even if they have giant deposits on the battery connections. Just a little baking soda or vinegar continuously added will over time with a little scraping remove almost all the deposits. When you're done you can neutralize any liquid that's left over with plain water which has a neutral pH and then add some alcohol and let it dry. If you are at risk of getting liquid inside your electronic item you can apply the vinegar or baking soda with the battery compartment upside down so the liquid does not go inside the item. In many cases, the corrosion will have removed the plating from the metal battery connections and will become more easily corroded in the future. It helps to add some dielectric grease on the connections to future corrosion. If you need to leave the batteries in for a long time it is good to reverse half of them so there is no current running through. You can also add a small piece of wax paper or plastic between the connections or remove them and put them in a plastic bag with the item. You can also use NiMH Nickel Metal Hydrate or Li-ion Lithium-ion batteries which rarely leak. Although Lithium can burn or explode. I find to have less leaking with lithium batteries. However, some electronics prefer you do not use rechargeable lithium batteries in them. The DJI Osmo pocket camera falls over if you try to stand it up. The DJI Osmo pocket camera comes with an excellent case. I decided to add some support legs to the case so I could insert the DJI Osmo pocket camera into the case and have it stand up without falling over easily. This is my first design. I did not want to make any cuts or holes in the case or make any permanent changes. I used tape and some card stock to make slots for some legs on the bottom of the case. Initially, I was going to store the legs inside the case. But I decided to make some extra slots for them. So the legs could be stored on the outside of the case. I think epoxy or hot glue would attach the legs in a more permanent fashion. In addition, it should be not difficult to add a grommet to a piece of wood on the bottom to allow it to rotate and extend out to support the case. I was also thinking it might be fun to put some little wheels on the end of the support legs to allow the case to be pulled with the camera or inside to make a little gadget to record videos while the case is being moved. This video shows how to make a Sterno type fuel I developed while I was experimenting with a way to make a low cost home made emergency cooker. I have used an improvised emergency cooker before.During the two weeks I was without power from Hurricane Andrew, I was unprepared and used a simple lid from a jar that I filled with alcohol. I removed the heating element from my electric kitchen stove and set the lid down in the stove and placed pans on top to heat up cans of food. This worked surprisingly well for reheating canned food and boiling water, was super cheap and easy to make but was very dangerous. I wanted to come up with a way to make a simple improvised cooker out of available material that would be safer than a lid with alcohol. My thoughts turned to Sterno fuel. In reality, during my 2 week power outage I was basically just boiling water and reheating canned food, I wasn't doing much cooking. Sterno has been around for years and is quite safe to use, and reheats food well though it is not a great cooking fuel. I started looking at ways to make my own Sterno fuel. I saw several methods to make Sterno fuel but was unconvinced many people would be willing to make their own . I started thinking about the easiest way to make a safe Sterno type fuel. I experimented with several substances before remembering diatomaceous earth I used to use as a filter aid when I worked in chemistry manufacturing. This substance is extremely absorbent and has many other useful properties. I tried different ratios and was very happy with my final results. By mixing two parts of diatomaceous earth to one part 70% rubbing alcohol, I was able to make a thick stable paste that would burn safely without any danger of spillage and should have a minimum of particulate matter released into the air while being burnt. The diatomaceous earth is very low cost and readily available as a filter aid in pools, and to a lesser extent in food grade which can be used in pest control. There is a danger in breathing the dust, and I also would caution the burning of any material in recycled cans as they may have a coating which could give off toxins when burned. The diatomaceous earth will also give off some burnt matter into the air , but it is almost entirely silica and a tiny amount of clay. It would be best to use it in a ventilated area also. This fuel I made is limited in its uses. If you have a regular alcohol or other liquid fuel stove and are not worried about spillage, there would be no need to make this fuel. Nor would you need to try this if you had a solid fuel stove and an outdoor or highly ventilated area to use it.
