Range testing a 151 MHz FM wireless microphone: Part 2
Another range test, this time with the receiver at home and the transmitter carried. How far do I get? And how did I get started in amateur radio? This video answers both. As this video is an unedited range test my signal drops out from about 10 minutes in. If you don't like that skip ahead where it will get better.
The morning started with an attempt to get more distant contacts by calling CQ on 20 and then 30 metres. After no responses on those bands attention was turned to 40 metres. Success was instant with many QRP and SOTA stations worked.
The demonstration once again proves that 40 metres is worth having on a pedestrian mobile station, even if antenna size means that efficiency is compromised.

Using an LM386 IC to drive an signal strength meter (and optionally AGC circuitry). If you prefer a gentler meter needle movement add between 1 and 10 uF from Pin 3 of the LM386 to ground. This also gives a slower AGC reaction.

A modification, using a centre-off toggle switch, to provide a wider capacitance and antenna tuning range. More information on the coupler discussed here: http://home.alphalink.com.au/~parkerp/projects/projcoupler.htm

A gathering of QRPers held at Chelsea beach near Melbourne on Saturday 9 November 2013.
QRP gatherings are rare in VK, though there are homebrew and SOTA groups that meet.
The day was most successful and and will hopefully become an annual (if not more frequent) event.

Going out portable on a warm day at the beach for some 40m SSB. Bands not in great shape but called CQ and got 5 or 6 contacts as per the video. I used an FT817ND & end-fed 20m wire with an L-match coupler.

Description of a 80cm diameter magnetic loop antenna for HF pedestrian mobile operation on all bands between 7 and 28 MHz.
This one is heavier than my previous loops (being made of copper tubing) but delivers better performance.
JUNE 2012 UPDATE: A video comparing this loop with another is presented at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YswnVmAKSP0 I have a new favourite loop!

Telescopic fishing (or 'squid') poles are surprisingly robust but can still occasionally break. This video suggests some uses for the remains.
