Fires rage in Seattle protests; National Guard activated.
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan is speaking live to reporters, She said she has issued an emergency order that imposes a curfew that extends through Sunday night along with an order that prohibits possession of weapons. "These criminal acts will not be allowed to continue," she said, while deploring the death of George Floyd in Minnesota at the hands of four police officers.
6:12 PM: City officials say two AR-15 style rifles were stolen from police. One has been recovered, which has been shown on KOMO News. But another one is still st large.
5:45 PM: All Seattle bound ferry service has been suspended as a result of downtown protests.
5:24 PM: Gov. Jay Inslee activates the National Guard to help respond to the downtown Seattle protests. Inslee's statement:
"At the request of @CityofSeattle I have activated 200 members of the @WANationalGuard to help protect against property damage and manage crowds and traffic in downtown Seattle. They will be unarmed and work under the city's leadership. "
5:17 P.M. Bellevue fire responding to help Seattle Fire Department extinguish blazes. Chants of Black Lives Matter coming from the crowd.
5:05 P.M.: The city just sent an emergency alert over cell phones. KOMO News crews say the crowd appears to be thinning out.
4:50 PM: The Washington State Patrol closed both directions of Interstate 5 through downtown Seattle as a protest over the killing of George Floyd spilled onto the freeway Saturday afternoon.
"The freeway is not a safe or appropriate place for demonstration,” state patrol Chief John Batiste said in a statement.
Thousands of people gathered in downtown and a largely peaceful early afternoon rally turned rowdier, with police pepper spraying demonstrators and deploying flash bands. Police said arrests were made but an exact figure wasn’t available.
4:49 P.M.: Mayor Durkan says she will be signing an emergency order and the City of Seattle will be imposing a 5 p.
