Need deer formula. Can you help? (See description).
Our little Honovi continues to progress well. We are slowly weaning her off formula, but definitely will need more, as we are running out. Could anyone consider a donation? We normally get it from https://www.squirrelsandmore.com/collections/white-tail-deer/products/fox-valley-33-30-white-tail-deer and our address is PO BOX 155, Otisville, NY, 10963. Thank you for your consideration, and for caring about our little wildlife residents!
You can give them all the toys in the world, and they play with sticks, rocks and the boxes. HaHa! (Leo of course!)

Frankie is our most “hibernating” bear. He almost never gets out of bed in winter, and when he does it is for very short periods of time. This video (and the one posted of him and Sonya, taken the same day) is him swimming for the first time this year. He also only just recently started eating regularly again. He eats very little in winter. Welcome back Frankie!

Leo the Syrian brown bear having a blast in his pond. It always makes me smile to see how happy the bears here are. Keep practicing those jujutsu moves Leo! This is extra loving because...well...at what point in this could YOU have actually shut it off? :) Enjoy!!

From Susan: It’s not easy to get bunny video. The motto of the rabbit is “run for your life”. I try not to discourage them from thinking that way, so I don’t handle them too much. This week they will be be weaned then they will move to an outdoor enclosure. A week later they will be released!

Randy and Rosie also took a jaunt out in the snowy yard to play together. It is so interesting to note the size difference. Randy is a male syrian brown bear and Rosie is a female kodiak bear.

A question we get dozens of times every year about this time is “Do the bears hibernate”?
It’s an interesting question because most bears in captivity do not hibernate. They do bulk up before the winter, they get their winter coats, and they eat much less. Going from about 30 lbs of food a day to about 5 lbs of food a day, although each bear is different. Some eat more and some eat less. Frankie is the sleepiest through winter and eats the least (our black bear). The bears also move around much less and are much less active but most of them will still get up every day and enjoy some time outside.
Scientists say though that bears in the wild do not truly hibernate either. They say they go into a torpor state. That means they CAN hear and they CAN wake up. So don’t believe you can walk into a sleeping bear’s den and wander about. That wouldn’t be healthy. :)
Most cubs are born in January and February! During this “hibernation/torpor” period.
