Kingdra will use Yawn to put opponents to sleep and Agility to speed up. Dragonite will use Hone Claws to become more accurate and Hurricane to confuse opponents. Altaria will use Cotton Guard to raise its Defense stat and Fire Blast with a Fire Gem to power it up for once. Salamence will use Heat Wave to strike all opponents in range and Hydro Pump for big damage. Druddigon will use Glare to paralyze opponents and Dragon Tail to force switching out. The gym of Fuchsia City has invisible barriers that form a maze. All of the trainers inside seemingly pose as Janine, and choosing the wrong one will fool you into battling a basic trainer. The real deal is at the center of the gym. Navigate the maze of invisible barriers and you’ll be able to take on Janine. Janine uses Poison type Pokémon. Crobat will use Confuse Ray to confuse the target and Screech to sharply lower the target’s Defense stat. Weezing will use Toxic to badly poison the target and Explosion to deal massive damage while making itself faint in the process. One Ariados will use Scary Face to sharply lower the target’s Speed stat and the other one will use Swagger to confuse the target. Venomoth will use Double Team to raise its evasiveness stat and Signal Beam for a 10% chance of confusing the target. After the battle, you’ll receive the Soul Badge and a TM84 (Poison Jab). Poison Jab has a 30% chance of poisoning the target.

Striaton City’s gym has panels on the floor that you must press that is super effective against the drawing on the curtains to open them. After beating the trainers and opening the curtains, you’ll take on one of the 3 Waiter Brothers. Depending on your starter, you’ll face just one of them. If you start with Snivy, you’ll face off against Chili with a Pansear. If you start with Tepig, you’ll take on Cress equipped with a Panpour. If you start with Oshawott, you’ll battle Cilan who has a Pansage. After winning, you’ll receive the Trio Badge along with a TM83 (Work Up). Work Up raises the user’s Attack and Special Attack stats. Unlike the previous generations, TMs can now be used more than once and will never dispose when you teach your Pokémon moves.
