Reflecting on the Conservative governments short-sighted determination to sell off the Alberta oil sands, regardless of the environmental and economic harm, she challenges Canadians to begin to "think like a country." Winnipeg, August 19, 2014: Thousands of Winnipeggers gathered at the Alexander Docks to honour the memory of Tina Fontaine and Faron Hall. From there they marched though downtown Winnipeg and held a vigil at the Oodena Celebration Circle at The Forks.
Tina Fontaine, a 15-year-old girl, was recently murdered and her body was dumped in the Red River. Faron Hall, a homeless man who gained national fame for rescuing two people from the Red River, on separate occasions, drowned under circumstances that are unknown at this time.
In a sad irony, Tina Fontaine's body was discovered during the search for a man, believed drowned, who later was determined to be Faron Hall.
Both were Aboriginal. Both lived in poverty. Both died because of the circumstances that resulted from being poor and Aboriginal.
Their deaths have shocked and saddened our community. Last night's march and vigil, which attracted thousands of Winnipeggers, is a sign that their deaths have united us as never before to overcome the racism and inequality that led to their passing.
