Goodbye Old Tripod Hello Peak Design Travel Tripod
My old cheap tripod failed me. It spontaneously released the plate, causing my precious Z6 to fall off the tripod and smash onto the floor.
This happened right before a week-long canoe trip where I was planning on shooting a lot of timelapse sequences. The whole trip, I was paranoid my tripod would fail me again, and I'd lose my camera to a cliff face or a lake.
On previous hiking trips, this tripod had fallen apart inside my knapsack. Clearly, it's unreliable junk that needs to be replaced for the safety of my gear, and my own peace of mind. A proper travel tripod is also the last big piece of camping gear I haven't picked up yet. Now is the time.
Once I got back home, I started looking up good travel tripods for hiking and backpacking. The Peak Design Tripod seemed to be the clear winner. Nothing else out there seems to have the same balance between compact and easy to carry, quick to set up, stable enough for a proper camera, and tall enough to be useful.
It's certainly an expensive option. I opted for aluminum to save $300.
These are my first impressions of the Peak tripod.
I have not taken it outside yet. A full review will not be posted any time soon. I don't have any big hikes planned.

I went on a vacation to Iceland last year. During the trip, I stuck a GoPro on the hood of my rental car to see if I could get some interesting footage.
Sadly, the GoPro has really poor battery life and only caught a tiny sliver of the drive.
Rendered in 1440p rather than thee usual 1080p or 4K, because I like to be different.

I noticed that ultrawide lenses reveal the interaction between IBIS and rolling shutter in video by creating a strange wobbly breathing effect.
This effect is made even more noticeable when the footage is digitally stabilized in post.
I shot this footage at a high shutter speed (1/200) so the image would remain fairly crisp after it had been deshaken.
Shot on a full spectrum converted Nikon Z5 with a Tokina 11-16mm/2.8 lens and a UV+IR filter that blocks visible light and allows though the light our eyes cannot see. This was shot using the custom white balance preset I had made for 720nm.

Back in 2006, Brad and I had a bit of an experimental industrial noise band thing going on.
12 years later, I realized, why not put this shit up on YouTube?
The video was created in April of 2018, using analogue feedback techniques that I would have used back then, rather than all the fancy digital filters I would use today.

What do you do with your old paintings that you don't want any more?
Unless it's heavy acrylic or contains certain harmful pigments, I burn my old unwanted art.
The basement flooded, and much of my old student work was water damaged, giving me the push I needed to get rid of a bunch of old stuff.
I see this as being no different from a musician deleting a recording of a jam session or band practice. These aren't important works, they are things I needed to do along the way to get me where I needed to go.

I was camping at Algonquin last week.
While I was at Burnt Island Lake, I set up my camera for some timelapse photography. It looked like a storm was approaching, and I wanted to test out a new camera rain cover I had picked up. As you can see from the video, once the rain starts, the clip ends. The rain bag was a failure. I'm glad I checked on my camera when I did, otherwise I would have lost it from water damage.
Once the rain ended, I neglected to clean my lens and resumed shooting.
Captured on my Nikon Z6 with the 24-200mm /4-6.3 lens.
Auto ISO and Program Automatic work together really well to allow for capturing the full range of exposures from the start of golden hour to astronomical dusk. You might notice the exposure length and ISO noise both increase as the video progresses.

Having trouble keeping yourself busy while staying inside and social distancing?
I made myself a coronavirus day planner wheel to help me decide what to do with my time.
It's a simple build, just a chunk of plywood and a screw, a marker, and a strip of cardstock.
The bulk of the board is dedicated to reading, exercising, and learning new skills, because as a responsible adult, that's how I should be spending my time. But recreation, leisure, and stress relief are also important, so I made tiny slice of the pie chart for drinking.

While exploring Toronto's High Park, I decided to visit the High Park Zoo. (which is free to attend!) On my way there, I stopped at a mulberry tree for a snack, only to find this little critter in the branches, munching away.
Raccoons may be cute, but they are wild animals, and can be dangerous. Do not approach them. Use a zoom lens to maintain a safe distance.
