There's a lot of talk about EIN, what it is and which interface has the lowest, but nobody discusses the technique used to measure EIN. In this video, I'm going to show you a very easy way to do that.
I'd like to point out that you need two things to measure your EIN - An XLR connector with a 150 Ohm resistor soldered betweens pins 2 and 3 (an XLR dummy) and a 1K tone generator. You can purchase both at the links below:
A bit more info glossed over in this video. dBu stands for decibels referenced to .775 volts (0.77459667 volts actually but close enough) with a 600 ohm resistor on an unloaded circuit. In other words, following the specifications Alexander Graham Bell used when creating the telephone circuit. This measurement doesn't involve a 600 ohm resistor so it's considered unloaded. dBV on the other hand is decibels reference to voltage with impedance or... 1V. In short... 0 dBu is .775V and 0 dBV is 1V. dBu is also considered used for more professional applications since +4 dBu is 1.228V and -10dBV is .316V (consumer line level).

The video I'm reacting to in this video was requested shortly after it was released. I had already watched the video and didn't want do an unfair, preplanned reaction video so I sat on it until I forgot what was said. I was just sent a request to react to this video again and since I've forgotten what was said, now is a good time. Enjoy, with me, a reaction to Deity Microphone's video "How To Be A Boom Operator".

Producers are clever and always trying to save a buck. Don't let a 3 letter word drop the rates in your area by 22%. You think I'm joking? Perhaps I'm being over dramatic. In this video I'll show you the math and explain why this is an accurate statement especially in the world of reality TV, ENG and commercials.
Sound is not an easy department to work in and as productions get more and more demanding, our workload increases. For some reason this isn't acknowledged and there's a constant pushback that sound professionals experience. It wasn't long ago that sound mixers on reality TV jobs created a mix directly to camera and only managed a few channels of wireless but today production is often wanting the world and wants to pay less than they were 10 years ago despite the skillset being much higher than back then.
I encourage my fellow brothers and sisters in the sound community, and other crafts, to spend 7 minutes and watch this entire video. The goal of this videos is to explain some things you might not know or have considered and if you found this video helpful, I encourage you to share it.

Let me start by saying that no, I'm not out to get Sennheiser nor am I here to poke at the engineering, design or anything about the Sennheiser MKH-50 microphone at all. On the contrary... the MKH-50 is one of the most notable microphones used in the motion picture and television industry because of it's low self noise, reach, smooth supercardioid pattern and beautiful tone all for a very reasonable $1200.
The "secret flaw" I refer to in this video's title is indeed a fair, non-click-bait title that doesn't just apply to the MKH-50 but many MKH series microphones and potentially any other microphone with switches recessed into the microphone's casing. There's a simple solution to this issue and I share it in this video so please don't think I'm trashing the MKH-50. Believe me when I say you should strongly consider a MKH-50 if you want some of the best dialogue tracks you've ever heard. As a matter of fact, you should consider the entire MKH line of microphones. Below you'll find links to 5 MKH series microphones you can expect to be top notch regardless of what you're recording.

That said, the MKH-50 does indeed have a tragic flaw that is usually not even spoken amongst professionals therefore it is indeed a secret. In this video I'll expose this secret flaw present in one of the world's most popular film and television microphones.

Welcome to Part 2 of the second reaction video. It may seem weird to have a 3rd video be part 2B of a video but if MTV's Finding Carter can call season 3 "season 2B" then I can too.
In this video I react to two amateur videos I found on YouTube that were released this year (2021). I'm not going to burn them to burn these content creators to the ground, I'm going to keep it positive and informative... unless they deserve it.

Andre is you man if you're interested in action cams and the like!
Microphone testing isn't easy and not everyone can do it so when I am given the opportunity to work with someone like Andre at Worth It Or Not, I jump at the opportunity when he asks for my assistance with a microphone test. Andre normally does reviews of action cams but occasionally he breaks from this norm and does something like this microphone review.

VeGue is a company that has reached out to me on many occasions and I've always turned them down but then... they've never asked me to just stress test their products before either. Perhaps after watching this video, they'll be interested in sending me one of their karaoke systems to review.

If you were to give each masked mic a rating between 1-10, what would they be? Write your rating in the comments below! Tell me which is your favorite and why. Remember, this is a blind microphone test so you can compare 2 mics without any pre-existing reputations affecting your ears and what you hear.
In this video I reveal the two microphones compared in Masked Mics 4. They were revealed to be:
Mic 1: Neumann U87AI

Mic 2: Neumann TLM-103

With drones becoming more and more popular in everything from feature films to content creation, the propeller buzz is something we in the sound world are going to have to deal with. The big question we film sound guys are always asked is "how bad is that sound?" They know the answer just like a toddler knows how bad something smells when they want you to smell it but it still happens often. In this video we're going to look at a few options and see if there's anything we can use to dial out the drone sound and preserve our audio.

In an industry where we can easily become jaded and dependent on all the good things we are given, you'd be surprised at how some crew members will go the extra mile when given a reward. You have to be careful to only reward sound friendly behavior (and not too early) and to recognize individuals that put in the effort to be sound friendly in their own way. Obviously someone that walks in a stage door when the lights are on would not receive one but someone that's walking with gear and stops in their tracks when they hear "Action!" would. It doesn't always work (and won't work on everyone) but it can certainly help you keep set quieter.
Keep in mind that rewarding sound friendly behavior comes in many different forms. Your trailer driver always getting you close to set would earn one. The transpo captain too for the same reason. Someone in the office that helps you get your expendables every time without hassle. A UPM that doesn't bat an eye when you ask for an additional team member on a day with difficult scenes. A gaffer that always keeps noisy lights off the set. Props people that always have quiet props for the scene.
