Socialism is the 20th century's greatest tragedy. Although its evangelists promised equality, prosperity and security, it was only responsible for misery, poverty, and absolutely 100% of the time ended up in tyranny.
Actually, it is interesting to note that socialism in the 20th century did achieve a form of equality after all, but only in the form that all people in socialist countries were equal in their misery and poverty. Having spent considerable amounts of time in actively socialist countries, I have seen the anguish of its proletariat with my own eyes... although I never thought that I would live to see the Kremlin lecture Washington on the dangers of socialism.
Just like Madoff's Ponzi pyramid scheme initially showed staggering success but then collapsed like the house of cards that it was, socialism demonstrates signs of success in its early stages. The essential problem is that all of the gains, real or imagined, fade rapidly as the basic and inescapable deficiencies of the policy of central control of an economy emerge.
I remember a gardener years ago discussing a particular way to over-fertilize a plant. That process would lead to a swift growth spurt and early blooming. Unfortunately, the plant would succumb to the excessive nutrients in the soil and would never bear fruit before it withered and died. That is an excellent metaphor for the life cycle of socialism.

Fashion designers are cashing in on new state laws allowing concealed weapons by creating clothes and accessories for the purpose of hiding guns.
Sarah Church, founder of her own eponymous clothing line, is just one designer whose creations have been featured at the Firearms and Fashion Show, an event held in Chicago that showcases how to incorporate items of self defense into your wardrobe.
One of her designs is a $165 front-zip hoodie dress that comes in black and green. 'This is a dress you could wear anywhere, anytime,' she told the Chicago Tribune. 'And when you're carrying a gun underneath, no one will know it.'
Marilyn Smolenski, who runs online retailer Nickel and Lace, and former police officer Karen Bartuch, who started AlphaGirls, hosted the second annual event in Chicago on Saturday.
They explained that the show has the purpose of helping women realize they can be fashionable at the same time as carrying arms.
'This is about getting women to think about self-protection,' said Ms Bartuch. 'We are girly girls who like fashion, but we like guns too.'

A candidate for a seat in the Florida House of Representatives is under fire over a series of controversial tweets.
Joshua Black is running for Florida House District 68, which covers parts of St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park. The Republican candidate perhaps inadvertently raised his profile to a national level on Monday after retweeting somebody's comment that "I'm past impeachment. It's time to arrest [President Obama] and hang him high." Black added in his retweet that he agreed.
Black explained it's his opinion the President has committed multiple crimes and if he's tried and convicted, Obama should be killed.
"I want to see all elected officials face the standard that everyone else faces. They should not be able to write a law and have us face it and then not have them face it," Black said.
On his Facebook page Black went on to say Obama should be arrested and tried for treason.

An interesting question has emerged in the wake of Liberal leader Justin Trudeau's recent string of unfortunate gaffes. Following Trudeau's ill-thought-out Ladies' Night last week, during which he unwisely (and perhaps jokingly?) expressed admiration for China's dictatorial regime, political observers are now wondering about the potency of the Trudeau 'cool' factor. Are Canada's youth becoming wise to the failings of the would-be prime minister? Will Trudeau be unable rouse the under-30 crowd to head to the polls in 2015? And as J.J. McCullough asked in the Huffington Post Monday, can the Tories use these flubs to "turn youth against Trudeau?"
The short answer, of course, is no. Stephen Harper — king of square, anti-pot and perpetually touting a "hidden agenda" — will never turn youth against anyone, never mind Justin Trudeau, who, at the very least, offers some brand recognition over his predecessors. Compared to stuffy old Harper, Trudeau has a long way to go to lose his cool, and would probably have to be spotted courtside with Kim Jong Un and Dennis Rodman to really damage his street cred among his 18- to 24-year-old admirers.

Climate hysteria is so absurd, with so little in the way of a feasible solution (to a non-existent problem) that we can only laugh at it.
We should laugh at climate hysteria, especially the fantasy proposals for stopping evil climate change. Electrify everything, running it on wind and solar? Restructure the economy? Restart the world in a green image? Stop eating meat and drinking milk? These proposals are all laughable, so feel free to laugh at them, as it will do a lot of good.
Same for the scary science that supposedly justifies these outrageous proposals. It only exists in monster computer models that are deliberately programmed to produce it. True science is based on observation and we are seeing nothing to support these fantastical hot models. The Boy Scouts of America said Wednesday that it lost 6 per cent of its membership after a year in which it announced it would accept openly gay boys for the first time.
The organization's national leadership voted in May to make that change, while continuing to exclude gay leaders. That angered conservatives and some members who consider homosexuality a sin and a violation of Scouting values.
BSA spokesman Deron Smith said Wednesday that the 2013 decline could partially be attributed to that change.
"There are many factors that go into a family's decision to join Scouting, and it's impossible to point to any single factor that influences our membership numbers," Smith said in an email. "This includes, but is not limited to, the limited amount of discretional time and parents wanting relevant programs for their kids."
With nearly 2.5 million youth and almost 1 million adults, Scouting remains a significant force in communities across the United States, even though its membership has slowly but steadily declined over the last decade.

Ever since the radio days of Sergeant Preston of the Yukon over half a century ago, I've been a fan of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
When my wife and I became Canadian citizens in 1973, we were thrilled to see a strapping Mountie in red serge attending the ceremony. In my few encounters with the Mounties since then, I've found them superbly competent and professional cops, and really nice people.
But it's time to disband the RCMP, and to build a whole new police culture in this country.
The grotesque killing of Robert Dziekanski is just the proverbial straw on the camel's back. Now that most of us have seen that poor man welcomed to Canada with multiple Taser shocks, we need to look again at the RCMP's last few decades.

Swiss Army Rifle
Gun enthusiasts were livid Thursday over the RCMP's decision to reclassify as prohibited a line of Swiss-imported firearms, which have been legal in Canada since 2001.
Whether owners of those guns, which cost between $3,000 to $4,000, will receive compensation is unclear. Shawn Bevins, executive vice-president of the National Firearms Association, said he spoke to a senior government official on Wednesday and was told that there would be none.
But Jean-Christophe de Le Rue, a spokesman for Public Safety Minister Steven Blaney, said Thursday via email that "all options are on the table" and that the minister was looking into the matter "on an urgent basis."

Corin Stokes has named her new baby daughter Lyla May Zafira Stokes, after the Vauxhall Zafira she gave birth in on the way to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, according to the Royston Crow.
She told the paper: "My husband just kept going because he thought we had a bit of time left.
"It was a bit of a shock for him when I leaned forward holding a baby. "I wasn't really scared, it just happened and the adrenaline took over."

But new research suggests vegetarian diets are associated with poorer health and quality of life.
The study also showed that vegetarians visit their doctors more than meat eaters and that they are more prone to allergies, cancer and mental health problems.
It showed that non-meat eaters have double the risk of allergies and a 50 per cent increased risk of heart attacks and cancer, CBS Atlanta reports.
They are also significantly more likely to experience depression and anxiety.
However, the research from the Medical University of Graz, Austria, did reveal that vegetarians tend to be healthier in some ways.

Baptism Gone Bad
Benito Flores, 43, was among several people helping his cousin, Pastor Maurigro Cervantes, baptise a man near the Guadalupe Dunes Preserve north of Santa Barbara.
Two others were swept out by a huge wave but were able to swim to shore.
The US Coast Guard says the search for Mr Flores was called off at midnight on Sunday.
The baptism was just finishing up at 10:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Sunday when the church members were hit by the wave.
"A big wave came and took Benito," Mr Cervantes told local broadcaster KEYT. "I tried to take him out, he was heavy and then another big wave came."
The US Coast Guard as well as local rescue officials were involved in the search but there are no plans to resume it.
Santa Barbara Fire Captain David Sadecki said it would be difficult for anyone to survive more than 30 minutes in the cold water.
Mr Cervantes, who leads the Jesus Christ Light of the Sky church in Santa Maria, said his church performed such ceremonies two or three times a year, according to the Santa Maria Times.

Reps. Omar, Adams among 16 members of Congress arrested during abortion protest near Supreme Court
Multiple members of Congress including Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Alma Adams, D-N.C., were arrested by Capitol Police Tuesday afternoon outside the Supreme Court building during an abortion rights protest.
Adams' staff confirmed her arrest in a tweet from her official account. Omar's office confirmed her arrest to WCCO.
In a tweet, Omar remained defiant.
"Today I was arrested while participating in a civil disobedience action with my fellow Members of Congress outside the Supreme Court. I will continue to do everything in my power to raise the alarm about the assault on our reproductive rights!" she wrote.
