Restoration Project #27 - Sony Trinitron TV
Finally, it is time to visit the first CRT TV of my channel! It is - like so many things - a random eBay find. A Sony trinitron one; Model number KV-14LM1E. Why does Sony have so weird model numbers? Oh well; besides the flat trinitron tube, it's a pretty basic model. No teletext and mono audio only. But at least it has on screen display and a remote control with only minimal battery damage. Nice.
When it arrived it was looking just like in the auction pictures, but it wouldn't turn on; I only got a "5-blink-error" code. The service manual mentions that that means an out of range value for the IKR or AKB circuit; both abbreviations seem to relate to the same error, I have no idea which is more accurate.
Anyhow, I was happily filming the troubleshooting and repair process, but somehow seem to have lost a bit of footage from that timeframe. Yikes. I hope it won't affect other projects; might have accidentally formatted the wrong memory card. These things need to get bigger so one can write on them again!
The repair and clean up as well as the adjustments are filmed again, as well as briefly explained. Geometry adjustments are done exclusively via the on screen service menu, so nothing about image size or linearity correction here. Just loads and loads of convergence controls to tune...

Tractor Repair/Restoration - Part 2 of yet unknown...The second part in my (hopefully!) three part series, I tackle a build up of about 46 years worth of grease and oil residue. And that is just the first step in painting the engine parts and at least that part of the tractor that will disappear underneath the engine again. I can paint the rest at a later time. Hey, I gotta set myself a limit somewhere, or I end up with pile of parts in no time!
I included some component work too: rebuilding the alternator, starter, windshield wiper motor and the dashboard... and an unpleasent surprise at the end! As is expected, one thing quickly lead to another, especially with the dashboard...Chapters

Workshop Project #16 - HP 334A Distortion Analyzer
This time, I have another - almost - vintage test equipment on my bench. I was looking for a distortion meter to check up on my occasional amplifier projects. Not that I personally care much about anything "beyond my hearing capabilities", but it's always nice to compare values between devices, particular between left/right channels of stereo amplifiers, where slight deviations might be noticable after all...
While browsing e-bay for something useful of that type, I discovered this HP 334A model. It was an affordable "as is" or "the light turns on" offer, and the service manual was readily available on the internet. MINE!
Join me in my fight against set screws, broken light bulbs, aged capacitors and empty camera batteries to find out if this device will serve me in future projects!
ADDENDUM: By now, I did read up a bit more on the definitions, and it seems that the device measures "THD+N" - it essentially puts a sharp notch filter in the fundamental frequency, that you can tune with the bridge, and the remianing signal (harmonics and noise) is what shows up on the meter.

Anyhow... I've seen these "button covers" mostly on old printers and similar devices. The cover on the two HP printers I got recently was worn through and I kept thinking: where do I get a new one? Well, this is certainly a solution; Not "perfect", but "very good" for home use for sure!

This time, I have a rather small project again; It did take some effort though, and turned out quite nicely If I may say so myself. But since stage hand has thrown out his back recently, I can't get him to lift heavy stuff for the planned upcoming projects... you know: unions!
Now what "machine level" is it? I have no idea about the brand or model in this case, as neither the device nor the box came with a label. If anybody out there knows what this actually was listed as, please let me know! The e-bay listing just said "machine level, used".
As is almost to be expected by now, the heavy object caused some damage in transit. In this case however, the damage was limited to the wooden box. Join in and see how I made a nice, almost new looking one out of it!

It has been some time! Sorry for the long hiatus, but I had to do some renovation work on the building where my puppet stage and workshop are located, so no chance to finalize videos. I pushed this one through in between cleaning and sorting stuff into shelves.
Eearlier this year I finally decided that I needed a spray booth. Both for what little airbrushing I do and for some of the restoration projects.
I did some improvisation to keep the cost down. All in all, it took about two days to cobble this thing together, and another afternoon for the little extra bit in the end.

Early 2022 I found an RF signal generator on ebay that was in need of plenty of TLC; Since it fit into my slightly growing "Precision" collection, next to the VTVM and the tube tester, I couldn't pass up the chance. It is a challenging project to say the least. I am not all that familiar with RF and take the opportunity to learn!

Most people nowadays think of reel to reel tape recorders as the "oldest" or "original" form of magnetic audio recording. But before the tape technology, there was "wire recording". It is the same basic concept, but uses a thin steel wire as a medium. Because it is so thin, it can only hold so much magnetism. To get usable audio frequencies out of it, the recording speed had to be rather high and the wires would snap... there are officially suggested "knots" on how to splice the wire in such a case.
Devices are still around on e-bay, so I wouldn't consider those to be "collectors items". Since I wanted a usable and decent looking unit, I decided to refurbish it on the outside and replace all the old capacitors on the inside for starters. This turned into quite a project, so here is part two, the mechanical part, and as soon as I have the electronics finished, I'll follow up with the final part!
In this part, I'm cleaning up the mechanical elements: from the motor to the spools. When I was almost done, I also found a service manual online which explained a few quirks. I am well into the electronics too, but still waiting for some spare parts to arrive; hopefully it will be done by next week so I have the third part ready in about two weeks!
