Today we wrap up processing coffee at home and actually get to taste our homegrown java. Roasting coffee at home wasn't tough, it just took a pan and some stirring.
In this video we cover removing the parchment layer, roasting coffee beans, grinding the beans and brewing. It was a long process and we probably did it the most difficult way possible, but the end result was good. This Liberian coffee isn't bad!
This is just too much.

Gardening in summer is no fun. Florida gardening - and by extension, Deep South Gardening - has two main seasons. Spring, and Fall! At this time of year, the weather is just too intensely hot.

The time has come to reclaim that which has been overrun by the encroaching bush! The field of pigeon peas... with the beds of yams and cassava... must be retaken! In this video I clear what needs clearing, then feed the pumpkin hill with compost tea. And perform what is most certainly the only rap ever written about weeding pigeon peas. The peas, the yams and the cassava are all growing well and should bear plenty this winter.

I've been growing Seminole pumpkins for a few years. In today's video I compare two different strains, one from Alex Ojeda and one of unknown pedigree I've been growing. Both taste excellent, though mine are bigger. As a easy high-calorie survival crop for Florida, Seminole Pumpkins are hard to beat.

Lots more on yams: http://www.thesurvivalgardener.com/category/crops/yams/
Though supporting yams on a fence or a tree has been my main method in the past, I can't do that down here by the river. Instead, I am staking yams with wood from the jungle. Growing yams really need some support. I shoot for 6-7' stakes and often leave their tops with a few twigs sticking out so the yams can spread out a bit. Right now I'm trying to get the yam bed all prepared before the rains start - we've had almost a full month of drought conditions now but when the rains start, those yams will jump up quickly.
Also, I got some goat manure and seaweed for my gardens - I'm laying some into the compost pile and some I'll probably put directly on the yam bed.

Today's question is from Kyle in Trinidad and Tobago who asks about using urine as a fertilizer. How often can you feed with urine? What about diluting Dave's Fetid Swamp Water?
