In this week's edition of N-FAQs, I answer a commonly asked question about the weight requirements for joining the Navy.
Question:
What are the weight requirements? I weight about 175 to 180. I don't know if that is too much.
Response:
When I first went to MEPS, I didn't make the weight or the BMI (tape test) requirements so everything stopped for me that day. The next time I went, I passed the BMI (tape test) but they didn't have a rating for me that day. The next time I went to MEPS, I finally got my STG rating.
Getting back to the question though, yes they did give me a ballpark amount of how much I'd need to lose in order to pass the weigh-in. After I got my rating, my recruiter told me to get down to the ideal weight for my height before I go to boot camp or else I'm gonna be worked harder while I'm there. Click the link to the PFA program below to view the height-to-weight chart.
When you run it, go to BCA Calculator, then male or female. After that, enter your height in inches, neck circumference in inches, and abdomen circumference in inches.
When you're measuring your abs, you're suppose to measure the widest part of them above the belly button. I originally thought it was where the ribs end so I got an inaccurate measurement. When it comes to your neck, measure the part right below your Adam's Apple (if you can find it).
The Ideal Height to Weight chart is right above where you'd enter your height and all that for the BCA Calculator, but if your BCA is below 25%, then you're good as far as passing your weigh-in the first time goes.
Once again, make sure you're within your ideal weight to your height according to the chart before you go to boot camp or else if you fail the first two PFAs, your RDCs will run you harder during PT and try to find any little reason to beat you so you'll pass the weigh-in before the final PFA! Keep in mind that this all depends on the kind of RDCs that you get and your motivation to get better and lose that weight.
If for some reason you don't make weight before you ship off to boot camp, you'll probably be put in the DEP (Delayed Entry Program) again and your recruiters will probably make you come to work out with them once (sometimes twice) a week in addition to attending the DEP meetings until you get shipped out again. It'll be a pain, but at least you'll have more time to lose that extra bit of weight. Heck, you might even get into better shape than the others that'll be there in boot camp!

Here's a quick sneak-peak clip of my upcoming Life In... video where I go through downtown Chicago.
I saw this street saxophonist earlier and didn't realize that he was playing Anchors Aweigh until I had passed by him, so after my shipmates and I finished eating Giordano's Pizza (which was AWESOME!!), we went back and recorded him playing Anchors Aweigh and then gave him some change in kind.
Like I said in my previous video, I won't be able to edit together everything that we did until I get my laptop mailed out to me, but trust me; it will be EPIC!! Stay tuned!!

Well gang, I'm getting kicked out of my apartment.
Apparently, the subleasing agreement that I thought was in effect actually wasn't. Technically, I'm considered an illegal resident and I have 24 hours to leave the premises.
I'm going to be moving back in with my parents. Eriopolis got into a fight with his parents over letting me stay at his place. They said that even if I spent the night there, they would pull all of his funding and throw out everything in his old room. Since he's got an incredibly bright future ahead of him, I couldn't do that to him.
Basically, I'm going to take all the money that I have right now as well as borrowing some money from Cashland in order to rent a U-Haul and move all my stuff back down to Celina.
This might very well be the last time you see me online for awhile since I'll be moving and getting an unstable internet connection from my folks' house.
I hope to come back soon, but I can't make any promises just yet.
Remember to stay hungry and stay foolish!

P.S: I'm going to try to take a leave of absence from work so that when I get another place and come back up to BG, I'll have a job waiting for me. If that's not a possibility, then I'll have to think of a new plan.

- 海軍 (kaigun), which is Japanese for Navy. Most Japanese people are surprised when I use that word, haha!!
5. What is your favorite thing about Japanese culture and why?

- What intrigues me about Japan is that while other countries try too hard to be like America, Japan incorporates American things and make them their own without losing their identity.
6. What is one thing that has surprised you during your time in Japan?
日本で驚いたことは何ですか?
- That fat people are more common than I thought, especially since hearing all the stuff about "Only 3% of Japanese are overweight or obese"
7. Have you picked up any Japanese habits?
日本の習慣を身につけることがありますか?
- I do quick bows and make sounds. In my area of Ohio, it's common if you see someone you recognize to give a quick nod to say hi, so extending that to quick bows was a pretty smooth transition.
8. Where is the next place you want to travel to in Japan and why?
日本で次に旅行したい場所はどこですか?
- Oh, there's LOADS of places in Japan I wanna go to! Just to name a few: Kyoto, Osaka, Okinawa (beyond White Beach), Sapporo, Hiroshima, and Nagasaki.
9. If you could start your life in Japan again is there anything you would do differently?
もし、また日本の生活を初めてからスタートするなら、変わりたいことがありますか?
- Learn more Japanese and stick with continuing to learn more. Also, going out and socializing more.
10. What's the best single piece of advise you have for first timers to Japan?
日本に初めて来る人にアドバイスとかありますか?
- Be open to new things, don't be afraid to make mistakes, make Japanese friends, and get out there. You didn't come to Japan to eat McDonald's all the time, did you?

In this mobile video, I talk about donating platelets from my blood today, keeping properly hydrated with the help of my super-duper water flask from UU, getting a free shirt & a day off, getting a new charger for my Droid 2 Global cell phone, and a quick update on the status of N-FAQs!
Also, note to self: don't record videos on the phone while the phone is charging. I noticed that there was a considerable amount of buzz and sizzle while it was plugged in and it went away when I unplugged it briefly.
