Rose Massett is the director, producer and director of photography of a new documentary, “Refugee Is Not My Name.” In her discussion with Scott, Massett explains the scope of the project, the goal of which was to put a face and a story to the millions of displaced people who have been singularly identified with the refugee crisis. Massett worked with a pair of teams who went to Greece to help NGOs and make “Refugee Is Not My Name” by telling the stories of refugees and volunteers. Massett then describes the challenges many refugees face after they receive asylum. Rose Massett is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she earned a degree in Film and Television production.

Scott interviews Ryan McMaken about the current coronavirus-induced financial slowdown and what it might mean in terms of the next big crash. McMaken explains that with America’s incredibly over-financialized economy, practically the only tool that the government knows how to use is huge injections of liquidity directly into the financial sector. This of course only eases the pain temporarily, delaying (and worsening) the eventual popping of the bubble. One danger Scott and McMaken foresee is that there can now be no principled opposition to those who clamor for government-sponsored, “free” programs like universal health care, free college, and other expensive social packages, since our government continues to demonstrate that it is perfectly willing to create a trillion dollars out of thin air and hand it out to certain people. The only question, at that point, is who gets the money.
Ryan McMaken is a senior editor at the Mises Institute. He has degrees in economics and political science from the University of Colorado, and was the economist for the Colorado Division of Housing from 2009 to 2014. He is the author of Commie Cowboys: The Bourgeoisie and the Nation-State in the Western Genre.

Ted Snider joined Scott on Antiwar Radio this week to discuss the war in Ukraine. Snider explains that we now know that early on, both Ukraine and Russia were willing to stop the fighting and work things out peacefully. But the U.S. put a stop to the talks and urged Ukraine to fight. Now Ukraine has suffered heavy casualties, blown through its defensive resources and lost territory its own generals say they’ll never win back. Snider berates U.S. officials for putting Ukraine in this position and argues that negotiations must start now before Ukraine needlessly loses even more.

John Kiriakou fills in some of the details of the real story of Maria Butina, the alleged Russian spy who is said to have conspired with the 2016 Trump campaign. The problem with the official narrative, explains Kiriakou, is that Butina is not a spy at all and there’s no evidence for illegal activity, except for a Foreign Agents Registration form that she should have filled out but did not. For this relatively minor, first time offense, Butina is serving more than a year in prison and has had her name and reputation completely and falsely destroyed. She has also been used in order to build a case of alleged collusion between President Trump and Vladimir Putin, which Kiriakou says is just as flimsy as the case against Butina.
John Kiriakou is a former CIA officer and author of The Convenient Terrorist: Two Whistleblowers’ Stories of Torture, Terror, Secret Wars, and CIA Lies and Doing Time Like A Spy. He is the host of Loud and Clear on Sputnik Radio. Follow him on Twitter @JohnKiriakou.

Heroic whistleblower Peter Van Buren returns to the Scott Horton Show to discuss his latest piece for the American Conservative, “2017: The Year the Iraq War Truly Ended.” Van Buren explains what he means by “the war is over” and why it doesn’t mean there won’t be continued conflict for locals in Iraq. Van Buren then discusses how he categorizes each of the different phases of the Iraq War, which has been going on for three decades. So what happens in Phase Four, once the shooting stops? Van Buren gives his best estimate of what’s next and how and why American attention in the Middle East is shifting away from control of oil. Van Buren then explains that, while the war may be over, it certainly doesn’t mean the troops are coming home. Scott then turns to Iran, and what their goals going forward with regard to Iraq. According to Van Buren they may be more modest than people think.
