Woman 'jumps' to her death off the Niagara Falls while holding her five-year-old son who miraculously survived.
A mother from Illinois jumped with her son from a 90-foot cliff onto the frozen banks of the Niagara Falls gorge. The woman died after the jump while her child miraculously survived.
The 34-year-old mother, who has not been named, was said to have jumped deliberately after climbing over a railing on Goat Island in Niagara State Park at around 12.30pm on February 12, state police said.
Her body was found near the Cave of the Winds complex, which sits on the US side of the falls that straddle the border with Canada.
The boy, 5, was rescued and transported to a children's hospital in Buffalo with a head injury but the mother died and her body was airlifted from the bank. The boy underwent surgery and remained in a critical condition as of the following day.
Photos obtained by DailyMail.com appear to show the youngster conscious while being loaded into an ambulance moments after the tragedy.
He was taken to the vehicle to be stabilized, and loaded onto a helicopter shortly afterwards to be flown away for emergency treatment.
The woman was visiting from Illinois with her husband and son when they fell. Police said that they were interviewing the husband as well as other witnesses.
The investigation is ongoing, but we don't believe it is an accident,' said Capt. Chris Rola of New York State Parks Police.
A state police spokesperson on Thursday said the incident was being treated as a suicide attempt.
The two fell into the gorge in the area of the Cave of the Winds elevator which allowed rescuers to easily descend. Niagara Falls Firefighters were able to traverse the bottom of gorge up the ice to where the mother and son had landed.
They were able to carry the boy to the elevator and bring him up to a parking lot on the island, from where he was taken to Oishei Children's Hospital in a helicopter.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was airlifted out of the gorge.
Niagara falls is a tough place to perform rescues,' said Rola during a press conference on Monday afternoon. '[The boy] was stable enough that they were able to carry him out bring him up the elevator to a waiting ambulance.'
'Unfortunately, the female is did not make it and she was recovered by the New York State Police Aviation unit and is being taken by the Niagara County Corner,' he said.
Rescuers traversed over '300 feet of dangerous icy terrain' while trying to get to the victims, police said on Tuesday.
'Although today's nice out it's very icy down there so it's real tough terrain that our guys and girls were able to get through and get to them and provide that life-saving care and do everything they could,' said Rola.
We are not releasing any names due to the possibility of this case being a suicide,' New York State Trooper James O'Callaghan told Buffalo News on Thursday.

Canada slams a ban on Nigerians, others from buying residential houses.
Canada, in 2023, is closing its doors to Nigerians & other foreigners who intend to buy residential properties for the next 2 years according to a new law that took effect on January 1.
The ‘Prohibition on the Purchase of Residential Property by Non-Canadians Act’ was enacted to lower residential property prices, thought to have risen sharply due to foreigners buying the homes as investments & leaving locals with no choice but to purchase at exorbitant prices.
“The desirability of Canadian homes is attracting profiteers, wealthy corporations & foreign investors,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party wrote on its website.
It added, “This is leading to a real problem of underused & vacant housing and skyrocketing prices. Homes are for people not investors.”
In cities like Vancouver & Toronto, taxes have been introduced to non-residents and vacant properties to deter foreign investors & make housing costs affordable for locals.

Man Sentenced To 25 Years Imprisonment After Stabbing His Ex-girlfriend 18 Times.
A man who stabbed his ex-girlfriend 18 times has been jailed.
It was gathered that the man identified as Robin Ibrahim, 28 lured his ex-girlfriend to an east London high street before stabbing her 18 times in a frenzied attack that left her fighting for her life, Met Police said in a statement on Thursday, March 16, 2023.
Robin Ibrahim, 28, of Brock Place, Tower Hamlets, was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment at Basildon Crown Court on Friday, 10 March.
He pleaded guilty to attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place at the same court on Thursday, 22 September.
Detective Constable Ollie Jones, the investigating officer from the East Area’s Public Protection team, said Ibrahim asked his ex to meet him outside a bank in Hornchurch High Street on June 28, 2021, claiming he was going to return a substantial sum of money he owed her.
“Ibrahim lied to his ex-girlfriend saying he had the substantial amount of money he owed her so she would agree to meet him. He then subjected her to a brutal, sustained attack where he stabbed her 18 times. I believe Ibrahim would’ve continued his savage attack had members of the public, including the victim’s sister, not rushed to her aid and detained Ibrahim until the police arrived,”
“Aware of how dangerous Ibrahim was, officers from the East Area’s Public Protection team and CID worked together to carry out fast-time enquiries to gather enough evidence for him to be charged. Ibrahim eventually realised the overwhelming evidence against him and that he had no option but to plead guilty to his heinous crime.
“I would like to commend the victim for the bravery she has shown throughout. I hope Ibrahim being jailed for a substantial amount of time gives her a small part of closure. I’d also like to praise the members of the public for the courage they showed in rushing to the victim’s aid on the day, preventing her from enduring further injuries or worse.”
The court heard that on 28 June 2021, Ibrahim asked his ex-girlfriend to meet him outside a bank in High Street, Hornchurch, so he could give her the substantial amount of money he owed her.
They had a conversation outside the bank, having missed its opening time, before the victim and Ibrahim made their way back to a nearby car park in Billet Lane where her vehicle was parked in order for him to pass over the promised money.
When they got to the car park, Ibrahim grabbed a knife from his bag and attacked the victim as she fell to the side of her car. He stabbed her 18 times before he was stopped by members of the public who bravely intervened. Officers swiftly attended and arrested Ibrahim on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon.
The victim was rushed to hospital with possible life-threatening injuries and had to have emergency surgery. She was subsequently discharged and continues to recover from her injuries.
Detectives carried out fast-time enquiries and managed to secure crucial CCTV evidence of the attack as well as Ibrahim’s journey to and from the crime scene.
He was charged on 30 June 2021 and was convicted.
