Pets With a Purpose | An Update On Some of the Animals On Our Canadian Homestead
Episode 331
Pets With A Purpose
Today on the Homestead, we are checking in on some of our animals as we do morning chores. Although these animals are pets, they are really pets with a purpose. All our animals live a great life with lots of love before these pets with a purpose ultimately end up providing for us. Cute piglets, fast growing lamb and goslings and an unexpected ... well long over due, surprise at the end.

Building Winter Pen for our Icelandic Sheep
This past weekend we worked on another fencing project. Not bad for building in mid December! This time we were hoping to get a winter pen setup for our Icelandic sheep. Conditions were good and the tractor cooperated and we managed to get all the post holes dug and the posts set which means the project is one more thing we don't have to worry about next year!

How Much Squash Should You Grow For Winter Storage?
Is everyone squashed out yet? Hopefully not as we think its time to take a look back at the amount of squash we grew in 2021 and what we have used so far from storage. All this record keeping is certainly helping us make decisions moving forward and its fascinating to really drill down into things as much as we can. Though its always hard we try to answer at least in our opinion how much squash you should grow for winter storage. And needless to say its still a lot! But it's doable and what we think is a good starting point.
Thanks so much for watching!

Chicken feed is a bit of a hot topic today as feed prices rise and many homesteaders are looking for ways to be more sustainable and therefore less depended on off farm resources when feeding their chickens. Cooking food for your chickens is a very good way to convert what may otherwise be a waste item into a homemade feed alternative for your chickens. Now this does not come without a cost as you will need some time to make this work but if chickens are providing your family with a sustainable source of food then the cost is likely going to be well worth the time and effort. Now in addition to using waste items we are starting to look beyond just scraps to ways to grow more feed for our chickens at home and today we are going to discuss some of our preliminary findings as it relates to cooking chicken feed at home to help in reducing the feeding cost of your chickens and provide them with a healthy diet they are actually going to eat.
Thanks so much for watching!

Shedwars21: The Spearmint Patch Is Going Wild
Todays Shedwars21: video is another bit of harvesting from our garden but this time its the spearmint plants which have somewhat gotten out of control! The big take home message here is there are so many plants that are edible and have benefits as part of our diet and not all of them require the same level of tending but having them available and on hand, even if they do get a little wild, is still very beneficial. Even though we are cutting back this spearmint patch we are still going to also transplant some into our food forest where the spearmint pats is going wild!

Introduction To Spinning Sheep Fleece Into Yarn Icelandic Sheep Fleece
This is our final installment of our introduction to how we process our Icelandic sheep fleece from the sheep to the finished project. This was not our best fleece for a couple reasons and we did end p discarding a portion of the raw fleece because i was not really in god enough shape to process. But hat is one of the benefits to r raising your own sheep you can be a little selective on hat you process, and the nice part about wool is there will always be more!
We do plan to produce more videos on this topic over the years and maybe look a little more closely at some of the aspects of turning fleece into a usable yarn product.
