Weird title but I think you'll agree that these devices are unexpectedly similar. One is powered by water while the other uses electricity. In this video I build both. Look up "shishi odoshi" for more information on the deer scarer (and moving sounding garden ornament).

144 MHz pedestrian mobile SSB from the beach. Contact made up to approx 50 km distant. It was a Wednesday night with contacts made during or after the 144.150 MHz VK3 2m SSB net.

Portable in this weekend's VHF/UHF Field Day. Out for 1hr. Using cheap handheld for FM contact and FT817ND for SSB on 2m. Flowerpot antenna for FM and 2 el yagi for SSB. Operating near beach. Contact up to 100km.

Converting an abandoned shopping trolley into a wheelable amateur radio station. I've only used QRP gear but bigger batteries and a linear amplifier could make it much more powerful. This test was during the Oceania DX contest but it was too early in the afternoon for peak DX propagation.
