Smoke and lava spewed from the site of a volcanic eruption in southwestern Iceland on Tuesday (December 19), with the orange light against the night sky visible from a distance.
A plume of smoke could be seen billowing into the air from a distance as police closed off certain roads around the site.
The volcano erupted late on Monday after weeks of intense earthquake activity, the country's Meteorological Office said, threatening a nearby town.
Fearing a significant eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula, authorities last month evacuated the nearly 4,000 inhabitants of the fishing town of Grindavik and closed the nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa.
Reykjavik's nearby Keflavik International Airport remained open, albeit with numerous delays listed for both arrivals and departures.
Local police said they had raised their alert level as a result of the outbreak and the country's civil defense warned the public not to approach the area while emergency personnel assessed the situation.

The first pride parade, not many people had come because, first of all, it wasn't a safe space, so people couldn't come, and we didn't even know that much. But now all of us, after the pandemic, everything was virtual and during that time many people found time and space to feel and think about how they feel instead of being forced upon what society tells us to feel like. STORY: Thousands of people marched on the streets of Kathmandu on Saturday (June 11) to celebrate pride month and Nepal's LGBTQ+ community.
Crowds of people were seen holding large rainbow flags, a globally-recognised symbol of the LQBTQ+ community, as they marched through the Nepalese capital, while others danced to Nepalese songs and the popular tunes of Bollywood.
Attendees welcomed the return of the annual event after organisers were forced to hold it virtually last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The socially conservative Himalayan nation has become increasingly progressive regarding LGBTQ+ rights since a decade-long Maoist civil war ended in 2006, and a feudal monarchy was abolished two years later.
LGBTQ+ people were counted for the first time in Nepal's 2021 census, a move that campaigners said could help sexual minorities gain better access to education and health schemes.
