Ep. 5037 – Nasser Arrabyee on Saudi War Crimes in Yemen – 8/12/2019
Nasser Arrabyee discusses the latest Saudi war crime against Yemeni civilians, the bombing of a family on the first day of Eid al-Adha. He also gives a summary of the last few months of the horrific war there, replete with complex political nuances that will not be resolved by a simple and total military victory. The war goes on only because the United States government continues to lend material support to the Saudis and will not openly condemn the conflict.
Nasser Arrabyee is a Yemeni journalist based in Sana’a, Yemen. He is the owner and director of yemen-now.com. You can follow him on Twitter @narrabyee.

Ramzy Baroud discusses the 100-year history of Jewish Zionism, which has resulted in a century of Palestinians being subjugated, killed, and forced off of their land. Palestinians have sometimes been criticized for not accepting the offer made at the time of the Balfour Declaration to keep about 45% of their land, with critics painting them as intransigent terrorists who refuse to negotiate reasonably or peacefully. Baroud explains how absurd it would be to imagine Americans, or any other people, meekly accepting the annexation of even 1% of their land, let alone over half of it. Today Palestinians have been left with much less than that 45%, and now the Netanyahu government is moving to take over even more of the West Bank in order to secure access to natural resources, land for settlements, and strategic military positions. Baroud believes that the Zionist project will not end until it has achieved the ethnic cleansing of every single Palestinian by whatever means necessary.
Ramzy Baroud is a US-Arab journalist and is the editor-in-chief of the Palestine Chronicle. He is the author of My Father Was A Freedom Fighter: The Untold Story of Gaza and The Last Earth: A Palestinian Story. His new book is These Chains Will Be Broken: Palestinian Stories of Struggle and Defiance in Israeli Prisons. Follow Ramzy on Twitter @RamzyBaroud and read his work at RamzyBaroud.net.

Scott Paul joins the show to talk about recent developments in the war in Yemen, where new casualty estimates claim at least 50,000 deaths just from direct violence. Oxfam estimates that the there are over 100 additional deaths from cholera and deprivation per day, and that when all is said and done hundreds of thousands of civilians will have been found to have died because of the war. Paul reminds us that there is plenty of room to negotiate peace, since most Yemenis hardly care at all about the politics of the war—they just want to be able to afford food.

Salon.com blogger Glenn Greenwald discusses the Justice Department's proposal to keep 50 Guantanamo inmates imprisoned forever without trial, the current 3-tiered justice system that provides the most generous legal forum that still guarantees a conviction, the problem with conferring "prisoner of war" status on Guantanamo detainees and the unaccountable "presidential assassinations" authorized by the Bush and Obama administrations.

Gareth Porter returns to the show to talk about North Korea’s nuclear program and the chances for denuclearization. One roadblock to denuclearization, he explains, is that the U.S. doesn’t know precisely how many nuclear weapons the North Koreans have, nor where they keep them, so it would be impossible to verify with any certainty that all the weapons were destroyed. Another roadblock is that John Bolton seems dead set on stopping a peace deal, going so far as to leak details of a DIA report to the press, perhaps in an attempt to turn the media against President Trump’s meeting with Kim.
Gareth Porter is an investigative historian and journalist on the national security state, and author of Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare. Follow him on Twitter @GarethPorter and listen to Gareth’s previous appearances on the Scott Horton Show.
