So is Aerith Alive or not? Short answer Yes Long answer: We all know its timeline shenanigans happening and Aerith, Cloud, Sephiroth have other timeline memories/knowledge. Tifa also briefly show case this. Now, Zack is in another timeline where everyone died leaving Midgar. As Sephiroth say its a world already accepting its fate - ergo no one to stop him so its a doomed world. Now Zack is alive in this world as his fate was changed and he takes care of Aerith and Cloud in it. BUT which Aerith and cloud is he taking care of? If the doomed timeline all heroes died, hes actually taking care of the alive Aerith from the current timeline that we see Cloud save. So what is happening is that After Aerith and Cloud Fall into the hole left by the ancient temple being destroyed (which they never did in the OG), they needed to recover from that fall while also being save from Sephiroth. Aerith know transports them to the doomed universe. Now they can heal up with the help of Zack and then Aerith send her and cloud back to the current timeline (Rebirth version - which is not the OG timeline) she than leads Cloud into saving her while not telling him the truth, something that Sephiroth also alludes to. Cloud saves her, but she still dies, the one that is dead is the memories of the OG fate/timeline and other timelines. Now the saved Aerith goes back to doomed world which form she can interact with Cloud and Co. Zack on the same time kinda manages to slip into the life/time stream and ends up in our current timeline. Zack and cloud fight sephiroth, the others fight Jenova and Sephiroth etc. Aerith who is alive in current timeline but hiding her body from Sephiroth, arrives back from the doomed world as she is afraid cloud wont win the final fight. Helps cloud and then she turns into life energy again - because she is going back to the doomed world (she does not actually die at that scene) Later she can now talk to Cloud when ever she wants and he's aware of the "true" situation correctly which is also why he can see the rip in the sky - that rip is other timeline/dimensions. ZACK is alive and will be playable Party member in part 3. Zack ends up at the Midgar church but in our current timeline and will join the party later (I am guessing after the first major arc of part 3) Now is also important to point that Sephiroth is correct that Cloud cannot trust Aerith in that she is lying to him which seemingly makes no sense as why not just tell Cloud the truth, this is because Aerith knows Sephiroth will know if she tell cloud to much. However the reason she is not telling Sephiroth is this is not because Sephiroth is the main bad guy - no the main bad guy is now Jenova. She has to hide that she has figured out the truth from both Cloud and Sephiroth.
