KiCAD Schematic and PCB - Quick Design Example and Build

In this KiCAD design example, we design a schematic based on a simple circuit, then the PCB layout, and upload gerber files for manufacturing. This goes very quickly and isn’t intended to cover everything, just a brute force Quickstart to get a feel for the tool. Other people’s tutorials may supplement this one if it’s not comprehensive enough!
When the boards arrive, we assemble and test them to be sure they perform the intended functions.

I needed a way to keep time while "playing" "music", and it wasn't practical to use an audible metronome so I soldered up a 555 timer and 4017 LED chaser and configured it as a visual metronome.
It kept time but I don't know if I did.

Here's a look at what the inside of a NES Advantage joystick looks like, and a look at the schematic to see how turbo fire and slow motion works.
An Arduino Uno is also put to work to read the buttons out of the controller for testing, and display button status on LEDs on a breadboard. That project can be expanded to use an NES controller as a general input device in other hardware projects.

Building and testing the Sparkfun Sparpunk Sequencer, which when combined with the Sparpunk Sound Generator, begins to provide the beginnings of an analog synth.
A 555 clocks a 4017, which switches in one of ten potentiometers to adjust the control voltage output. The sound generator takes the control voltage and uses it to control the pitch oscillators.

I bought an Aoyue 888A hot air soldering rework station with soldering iron, adjustable temperature and air flow with digital displays, but I had to fix a few things before I could even test it out:
The fuse was protecting neutral instead of hot,
The soldering iron panel connector was recessed and had to be glued,
Some parts had insufficient solder on the PCB,
One component was detached from the PCB,
Some leads needed to be clipped closer to the PCB
Then I was able to test the work station.
